July 2022 Purchases
3 2018 Wynns Harold Cabernet...on clearance
12 2020 Metala...last run before the family who brought back the farm, jacks up the prices for the 2021 release
Post-script, 3 white label 2021 Metala's to be released by the Adams at Langhorne Creek, the whole (shiraz/cab blend) and the sum of its parts (a straight shiraz and cabernet). At $20 their dreaming, even though I have enough to have a bath in, pity, really wanted a dozen or two of the 2021.
Cheers Craig

Mike not sure if that's meant for me but I'll take it. Rossco and I certainly like the Metala...I picked up some myself and had some VC cellar shares to spend, so ended up being very very cheap

$10 is almost worth the veiny claret nose associated with drinking mass agriculture wines. I’d be in for a few cases too. Keep the Mongols hoards from my good stuff.

Thanks Mike!!
yes its a big make, but its one of the few wines that can justify reputation and ages beautifully...I have never experienced so called vieny claret nose in a Metala, perhaps in 80s Jacobs Creeks, Thomas Hylands and certainly in modern day Koonunga Hills and the disastrous Rawson's Retreat.
Whilst I certainly rate the wine, $20 for the current 2021 is just a bridge too far at the moment
Cheers Craig

Hahaha it's a bit of an all rounder for me. I give it to the in-laws when I they visit. It cellars pretty well and it's a good mid week quaffer. Also I'm not afraid to crack one and just use it for cooking. Not many wines tick so many boxes at $10 P.bJamieAdelaide wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 6:57 am $10 is almost worth the veiny claret nose associated with drinking mass agriculture wines. Re: July 2022 Purchases
Some nice ports for sale at the lastest MW auction, but I skipped the 60’s wines and picked up 4 bottles of a 73 Port from Kaiser Stuhl - 2 very close friends come from that vintage and we will have them next year.
Also picked up 2 Boudingnon 2019 Vouvray and a 2005 Penfolds Bin Aged Riesling. Almost got into a bidding war for a 78 Orlando Jimmy Watson winning Cabernet, but i had to leave for home, so let it go. I wonder if it went to one of board members ?

Well done on the Metala's Malcolm.
Suspect that there will be a few of these floating around following the recent TWE museum recorking program/Langton's sale, and the Brand going back to family hands.

Agree, nice pick up of the Metala Malcolm.
Would love to hear how they’re travelling when you open them.
I see some of these come up at auction but condition is usually not great.
Cheers Con.

Hi Cameron.
I’ve had a few of the 73 Kaiser Stuhl VP’s and if the cork does it’s job should be drinking well. They’re also great value for money. Still have 3 left in the cellar.
Cheers Con.

3 x 2018 Boasso Barolo Margheria
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
Re: July 2022 Purchases
Interesting!
We stayed in one of the apartments that the family rent out, and can recommend them if ever in the region (they're near Serralunga). We'd not been aware of their wines before that stay and went into a tasting there with modest expectations. It turns out that style-wise the wines were the sort we like (a strong lean towards traditional) and surprisingly the biggest highlight was the Barbera, a grape I don't always take a shine to. The Barolos all very enjoyable as well, with fine value for moiney.
Have you tried the Boasso wines before?

Re: July 2022 Purchases
I had the 2017 Boasso Barolo Margheria back in May . Did a Barolo night with a few lads. Was a massive eye opener actually. Keep meaning to post pics and some feedback. Had a contact source for the 2018 so thought why not. Tucked away in the cellar now.Ian S wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 2:49 amInteresting!

Serrat do a mailing list offer first and then release to everyone else a couple of weeks later. Not sure whether it is in retail land as I buy direct every year. So that might explain not much being left. Not huge amounts from '21 either.
I really like the wines and have been buying since the 2008 vintage. I probably drank too many of them way too early, as I'm missing a few vintages in the cellar, having purchased every year available. I only buy the SV, Chardonnay and Grenache normally. Most recent SV I had was a 2010 and it was excellent with plenty of life left (I normally try each vintage a couple of years after release, but found a couple of the 2010's lurking in the back of the drink now fridge). I don't normally buy a lot of cool climate shiraz as I don't usually enjoy overly peppery examples. I find the Serrat SV doesn't overdo the peppery notes at all. The viogner doesn't poke it's nose out too far and if I'm being honest, I'd have to admit to cool climate SV like Clonakilla and Ravensworth being more preferred than say, examples from the Barossa (except Standish Relic) as a rule.
The Chardonnay is always excellent. Very Yarra Valley and not overworked. The Grenache is definitely on the lighter side. Mike Bennie (I think it was, but happy to be corrected) coined a term "Pinosity" when tasting the more modern take on Grenache. The term works for the Serrat Grenache. It's a bit more delicate than your typical SA Grenache. Those that know me know that Grenache is my favourite wine variety, but in the case of Serrat, the SV and Chardonnay are my picks. They also make a few other wines as well, with the Pinot always being popular. Plus from what I read, 2021 in the YV is a hit it out of the park vintage. I'll be going long on Chardonnay.
Cheers
Ian

Re: July 2022 Purchases
Thanks Ian - appreciate the information. Always a good indication when someone has such a long association with a winery. Will have to sign up for the mailing list next vintage.
I’ve managed to get my hands on the Chardonnay, and good intel on the 2021 YV vintage.
Cheers Ed
