Likewise. I wasn't going to but Dan's description of the vintage got me over the line. I'm a sucker for a slick sales pitch.

You have a very good memory David, it was a 2010 Theorem IIRC. Absolute belter of a wine, smashed pretty well anything that I have had from the BV over the previous 25 years, and I've had most of them.
If vintage reports in the BV suggest that 2021/21 are the best pair since 1990/91 ( well the marketers will pump the tyres on this too!!), then I will go round twice more...have 50 bottles of Standish now...most expensive wine I have ever purchased (on release)...more than a JR

Spoke to Dan 2 weeks back, he thinks the 2020 due to low yields will stack up...but then said wait for the 21s!!

A lovely tasting yesterday with Brett Grocke at Eperosa. I had always wanted to get to this winery. Brett shares a vineyard with Rockford and also fruit from Ben Radford's new set up at Stonegarten. Close knit bunch these Barossa people.
Picked up a mixed dozen of the four 2020 Shiraz releases; Magnolia, Lyndoch, 1965 and 1896. Cracking wines and a great experience.

3 x 2018 Wynns John Riddoch
3 x 2020 The Standish
3 x 2020 Schubert Theorem
3 x 2020 The Relic

Being off work with covid this week hasn’t been good to the bank account, as lots of time to look at wine. As someone relatively new to this, I wasn’t on the Standish mailing list so assumed I’d missed out but thankfully was able to get on board.

Well done on the JDM, I ummed and arrhed about getting one, but simply couldn't justify a single bottle or 4 quintets. Surprisingly, there are still a couple of retailers who have stock.

Thought I’d kick myself by not getting one or two in the cellar , as I already have a few mount Mary’s in the cellar and know the heights they can reach after two -3 decades . This perhaps even more , and whilst it looks contradictory with the gembrook above , for me when at its best Cabernet is yarras best variety

I took the line that it’s 2 thirds the cost of some of Australias icon wines and a far rarer proposition. I guess cost and value can be such a subjective thing in wine

I buy the Standish and Eperosa every year. Yalumba was for a good cause and the Bindi Grenache should be interesting. The rest were impulse buys.

But yes, been a big month. Hopefully back off for a while now. Although.....

I have so much Rockford in the cellar that it's getting a bit silly  . Having said that, it is a favourite. I'm up to date with everything I currently want. Went again on the 18 BP and got some Dry Country last month. Will pay a visit to the cellar door in October and if anything jumps out....

Brett's wines are great. I remember doing tastings with him when his winery was behind his Mum's house in a tin shed in Tanunda. Great to see him getting the accolades he so thoroughly deserves.

Cheers

Yes I am re-engaging with the Barossa, following winemakers who do their own thing outside their day jobs and those who have moved from one winery to another e.g. Ben Radford, Phil Lehmann. I had heard of Eperosa and it was great to try the wines. The 2021/22 vintages will do me a favour, an opportunity of a few extra cases of really good gear, a bit of diversity before I bow out.

Yes, agree with your thoughts on Rockford, but its a nice problem to have.

2022 is shaping up to be sensational year in SA. Some good rains in January, followed by a long mild dry spell, allowed for great ripening conditions and not a lot of stress to the vines - Cabernet especially is looking strong  .Of course there are winners and losers across the diverse wine regions of SA (frost, hail and storm damage), but on the whole 2022 follows up a very strong 2021 also.

Craig,

Do you rate the Petaluma over the Gladstones available for the same price?

I also note they offer the 2003 for $2/pb more than the 2015...and the 2019 yellow label Merlot for a bit less.

Kenzo, I have not had a MR or a Gladstone's for a while. Sadly, WA as a whole is so poorly represented in my cellar. More Coonawarra and YV.
I would be confident that the Gladstone's is a good wine...Petaluma has been a very long term favourite, 2015 not considered a sterling vintage, but I think it will age very well.
Simply too much wine.
MJS might chip in, he would be far better versed than me to comment on WA Cabs.
