April purchases

Post by Ian S »

It looks like there's not one of these yet, so I'll start it.

I've not bought much in recent months, often just the odd bottle here or there, but did pick up a half dozen today.

Amusingly (and pleasingly), when I asked the shop if they had some bulles de miniere (a lovely dry cab franc sparkling red), they said "yes, over there in the bargain bin" :o

It's one thing finding a bargain, but even better when you actually intended to buy it that day anyway!!! So rather than the 2 bottles I intended to buy, I bought 4 (for the same price I'd expected to pay for 2).

I also picked up a couple of 2011 Rieslings from Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben. Not reduced, but I've tried them before and loved them. Two bottles should cover the 2 expected warm days of summer

1 x 2020 Lakes Folly Cabernet
3 x 2019 MSV Greenock Shiraz
3 x 2019 MSV Gomersal Shiraz
.
I’m also going to buy some of the Tyrells Vat 7 Shiraz as a quaffer. Great wine for the price.

Great to see Alkoomi mentioned. I've not seen their wines in over a decade, but remember meeting the founder / owner (Merv Lange?) at a big uk tasting maybe 20 years ago and he came across as a true gentlemen (and genuinely worried that people might misconstrue the name of this wine). I was especially impressed by their Semillon 'Wandoo'.

There seems to be big interest across the forum in Te Mata's Coleraine this year, and not just from Craig!

Thanks Ian - that’s great to read. Yes, I have to say I wasn’t overly familiar with Alkoomi (for that exact reason, you don’t hear much about it). You can often find their wines available at very reasonable prices, and they’re great drinking at those prices, so it’s become one I now look for.

I’ve much less knowledge and experience than most on this forum, so have followed the masses with Te Mata’s Coleraine - haven’t tried it before, looked too good to pass up.

I normally miss it because of the EU time zone, but I happened to be looking at my emails pretty late here so first thing in Aus, got lucky.

Get them while you can (at a sensible price). For years they produced good robust Barbaresco at a very appealing price (I think we paid <€20 a bottle at the winery back in 2012). Galloni has suddenly discovered them and is throwing big scores around, and Burlotto's *retail pricing tells you where that is likely to end up.

I really like the style, very much made for cellaring, but that style isn't to everyone's tastes.

* Not Fabio's fault - it's distribution and retail that slap heavy markups on the wines, not him.

Thanks Ian. I agree. I've only had two of their wines but I think I've now collectively bought 24 bottles over the last few years on hearing the hype as well as confirming myself albeit in limited quantities

Hi Malcolm.

I got an offer for these this morning for just under $30.
Same place I assume?

Cheers Con.

Yes Con, same place that sent me an email too. I picked up a dozen on release for $25 a bottle, so $30 is pretty reasonable. I thought about another 12 but have so much Wynns. The 19 vintage is excellent and when you and I and others get around to doing an offline in 10, 15 or 20 years, you'll be glad you picked these up.
Unfortunately, need to come into some coin, to snap all these bargains!
I'm in the middle of sorting out some Parker, Yalumba, Redman, Petaluma, Bowen and Katnook purchases. Too much wine
Cheers Craig

Still trying not to buy red wines but succumbed to some that were well priced:

2014 Rivera 'Il Falcone' Riserva, Apulia (made with Nero di Troia) x 2 at $18 each
2016 Gabbiano Chianti Riseva x 2 at $15 each.

On the white side of the ledger six bottles of Jim Barry's 'Jim's Garden' Clare Valley Riesling for $13 each.

Cheers ................. Mahmoud

Hi Mahmoud
I'm guessing you'll have had the Il Falcone before, but if not, approach with confidence. It can take a decade+ of cellaring, but drinks well from the off.

Hi Ian,

Indeed I have. I had a bottle of the 1997 and really liked it, so much so that instead of the usual pair I put away four bottles. Later I added a bottle of the 1998 and then a 2000. Sometime later I tried a 2004 and added three more. I really should be drinking the 1997 but do not know where it is in the stacks of wooden boxes.

Rivera's 'Ceppalacio' Aglianico is, or was, also quite good and I cellared a pair of the 1998.

Mahmoud.

1 * Charles Heidseick Mis en Cave 1996 base
1 * 2019 Clos La Hutte Savenieres, Boudignon
1 * Little Wine Nr 3, Sami-Odi
1 * 2019 Chinon Vieilles Vignes, Alliet

Last 3 bought at the wonderful East End Cellars in Adelaide. I left a number of bids for the MW Wines
auction, but the only 1 to come thru was the Champers. I I never liked bubbles very much until I tasted this in 2002. Imagine it’s past it now, but it was worth a punt.
