2002 Dom Perignon

Hi all

A friend has been gifted a 2002 Dom Perignon in its orginal box. Storage unknown. She wants to sell it but has no idea what it's worth. Is 2002 a good vintage? The one sale I can see on Langtons in recent months was $402.

I can see that recent bottles of 2000 went for $450-$500 on langtons but there are sales of 2004 for $271 and 2006s for $271-$291.

So that's ball park, but happy to hear from the experts about the 2002 vintage.

And Michael +1 on when you have found out from Wickham's an estimate, pay the money to your friend and then drink it . Mike (nyc) will no doubt advise, but seem to recall 2002 being pretty good.

It’s a good wine from a great year…I went very long on it. The P2 is even better from 2002.

Champagne is notoriously fickle if not well stored so auction buys are risky. That said, it’s not going to be your friend’s problem!

This may not be helpful but it seems to me that the friend should never have been gifted the '02 DP. It was far to grandiose a gift, so much so that the recipient decided to liquidate it rather than enjoy it, which was the intention of the person who gifted it. As far as I am concerned it was a kick in the teeth.

Yes good point, clearly not in the frame to consider drinking it, yet eyes lit up like saucers when there was realisation about money to be made.
The irony perhaps is noted, good wine but too good to drink.
I would have thought there's not much 02 DP in circulation...if one was to drop into your lap..then sieze the day.

The reality is it was a wedding gift from a business aquaintence to someone who doesn't drink much wine. She knew it was a really good and possibly expensive wine but had zero idea how much it was actually worth. Her eyes didn't "light up like saucers when there was realisation about money to be made" Craig. She is worried it will be wasted on her. And if someone gives super expensive wine to somone who doesn't drink much wine well that's on them surely.

It's not the first time I've seen people on this board get narky at the idea of someone "profiteering" from wine (or at least being accused of doing so). I dont really understand the resentment. Obviously people on this board generally share a passion about wine and that's most likely fuelled by an enjoyment derived from consumption but I think there's value in recognising that other people collect things and trade them, or just have a different outlook.

Not sure I can articulate exactly what I want to say but life is too short, everyone should chill.

Yeap exactly...As long as she has no firm belief storage has been questionable..all good. It is up to the buyer to decide.

Yep do what you like, I think I am fairly chilled, people can make cash, and I'm thankful for that, otherwise, I would not have had the opportunity to pick up some great secondary market buys.
However, life's short, have a splurge, pop the cork, knock it off, no regrets.

Just to go a little off topic, has anyone tried the 2012 Dom Perignon yet? Apparently it was released in June 2021, but I haven't seen it in store anywhere yet.

And what did people think of the 2010? For me it was a bit disappointing.

I’m planning on opening a bottle of the 2012 in the next few weeks. When I was at the winery a few years ago, they were very excited about this release.

The 2010 was middle of the road… qualitatively akin to 03, 05 and 06, albeit different styles.

Hi Michael,

It's not helpful because I'm not answering your questions about price and vintage. However, since you told us about the circumstances, it being a gift that the person turns around and wants to sell, all I did was express my opinion. Surely there is no harm in that. Sure some may not care but I know that I wouldn't like it if a gift I chose to give was sold. I'd wish I had given something else.

... the 2012 is superb. IMO, much better than 2008.

Bought a couple of bottles for $110 from a local supermarket a few years ago. The first one we drank was good, the second one a couple of years later was stunning. I’d say it’s $500 at auction in NZ now. Champagne seems to be doing very well
