6 x 1998 Clos l'Eglise

Excuse/justification for this purchase: Every time I have had a 1998 Pomerol in the last five years, my reaction is consistently "damn these are good". They are aging at a slow pace but keep getting better and better. I need more; but top wines like Trotanoy and VCC are now very expensive - so went down the food chain a bit

Very surprised to see a Vin Jaune at Dan’s - ‘13 Auguste Pirou. Not a top producer, but not bad. $76 - not sure there are many cheaper around. Only a tasting bottle for now, but will try and get some more.

The 15 Mosconi excellent so I’m guessing 16 a ripper !

I bought some too. I actually have the 16 via Nuova from Chiara on the tasting bench.

Mosconi is a vineyard that takes time due fierce tannin - winemaking and a little bit of barrique can soften. Wouldn’t be in a rush to try but who knows with 16?

Hi Sam, I had a 2010 version of this last night and was happy to see it was sealed with a diam cork. The wine was in such a nice place, for me most Burgundies are best with 10-12 years of cellaring.

I've got the 2005 and 2010 of this - really nice Burgundy at an affordable price.

At a Bouchard tasting in Melbourne tonight and was not impressed by the wines. The 3 whites, including an 05 Corton Charlemange, and 4 reds featured a consistent soft, low acid mouth feel that seemed manufactured. The ‘17 Volnay Tailepieds was soft, warm and accessible - expected just a little bit of tannin at the very least. If you don’t want to age the wines, then they were fine, but I can’t see why you’d pay the premium for them in that case.

What vintages were on tasting, mychurch? I've had quite a few aged Bouchard Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus in recent years with 10+ years of age (e.g. 2002, 2005, 2007) and they've been excellent.

Given the wide differences there can be in the area, there was similarity to all the wines that made me think the wine making was trumping the terroir. Still young though - I can imagine the 1er and Grand Cru wines changing over time.

After the event I shared a bottle of Oakridge Blanc de Blancs 2014 and 2019 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay with a few of the other tasters - best 3 wines of the night for my palate.

Winemaking trumps terroir every single time. There are plenty of producers where I'd rather have their village or even Bourgogne over some other producer's 1er or GC. Granted, the economics of making a poor GC don't make sense but how they take care of their vines+winemaking decisions makes a much bigger difference than the terroir itself. The terroir gives you the potential but not all producers take advantage of it. Terroir might give you some of the starting personality of the wine..or the base characteristics of the wine but it doesn't define what it will be.

That isn't to say terroir isn't important...it definitely is and realistically, if you're making poor wine from GC grapes, you're better off leasing your vines to someone so that dynamic provides for a bit of a floor. But it still comes back to producer producer producer...
