Surely, the stupidest wine auction ever held

Just got an email from a mate telling me to have a look at the Langton's auction site. There is, without a single doubt, the craziest auction ever held.

I was pointed to one item, but the whole auction is, sadly, laughably and ridiculously overpriced. Little wonder there are virtually no bids.

Anyway, check this out:
1999 Olivier Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Champ Gains"

had several vintages of that wine, although it's not Domaine Leflaive, Olivier leflaive always represents good value, if not outstanding wines. Indeed, I purchased the 2006 and 2007 versions of this wine here in Australia for about $50 each, a great buy.

Langtons estimate: $1350-1650

the scary part is there are four people watching it!!!
I had a look thru the auctions, there are countless wines you can purchase cheaper a retail, that is before the auction commission.

I do agree with you Felix, and was laughing when I saw the pricing of the Penfolds Grange 1970 against the Penfolds Grange 1971. The 1970 is at $2771 and the 1971 is $1682 per bottle.

I’m assuming the 1970 Grange is dearer due to it being an anniversary wine this year, rather than the 71 which is obviously a hallmark year for grange.

Well Pat and Jamie I think we are all wrong (the virus must be affecting them in some way) because as of 2000hrs tonight out of the 3 single bottles of 1970 Grange, there are bidding on 2 of the bottles. Langton’s estimate per bottle is $2800 to $3200 and the bid start at $2772. The first bottle there is a bid on at $2772. The second bottle the bid is at $2775 by a single person. Well this only confirmed that at $2774 the reserved has not been met. As for the 3rd bottle there is no taker and sitting at $2771. The level of all 3 bottles of the 1970 Grange are at base of neck with minor label damages.

No one is looking at the 3 bottles of the 1971 Grange.

Perhaps parochially, I'd find more Aussie chardonnays more interesting than this one around the $100 AUD mark. I've had the wine many times ( maybe not the 99 )

Anyone buying white Burgs from the mid 90’s onwards needs to have done a lot of pre- auction tasting, something that online auctions never have. Even at $10 a bottle, I’d be hesitant. 99 is the worst offending vintage for premox according to Don Cornwalls research and these wines should only be bought at restaurants or from suppliers who you know will take them back if they are oxidised. Given that it’s 21 years after the vintage these wines may well have been advanced even without the issues of premox and no matter how big a 21 st birthday dinner the bidders are planning, they really should spend their money on something else.
