2001 Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1

Ah....... this is why you buy from the cellar door and then keep in temp controlled storage until you decide to drink it. Such a beauty!

2001 Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1: Mid red colour, showing some bricking at the edge. Engaging & enticing nose of brambly cedary Cab Sav / black currant with some cool climate leafiness. Palate is even better. Balanced elegant long refined classic just wonderful. Palate has lots of cool climate black currant Cab Sav fruit, cut with EXACTLY the right amount of dried herb leafiness. Tannins are fine grained and resolved but still present and frame the wine just perfectly. Wonderfully judged ripeness for me (bottle says 12.5% alcohol) with that hard to describe Bordeax feeling whilst remaining clearly both Yarra Valley and a Dr Carrodus creation. Jeez this is good, everything I could possibly ask from a YY No.1. For me on the night, magical. Probably approaching its apogee but will undoubtedly be great still another 10 years time.

Still have 3 bottles left in my fridge ( got them at CAD40 a pieces from a wine store which knew nothing about YY, along with a 6-pack of YY 2000 Portsorts!). Almost the same reaction from my friends and myself, except that I have learnt that decanting the Dry Red 1 for about 10 hrs brought out the best. Time to drink the next one. We actually compared it against a 04 Diana Madeline during a Brome duck roast dinner.

How true. Experiences like this make the cost and effort of correct storage all worthwhile.
