Drank: Maxwell Sparkling, Dom Perignon 96, K1 Merlot '01, Odyssey 98, Wirra Angelus 98, Command 98, Old bastard 02 on the eve. Angas the Bull '02, Brokenwood Rayner '98 and Command 99 on Christmas day.

Hi Everyone,
Went to my sisters, she supplied the food, and I brought the wine.

97 Tyrrells Futures Semillon......lemony and very good

96 Peter Lehmann Sparkling Shiraz....should have had 2.

98 Wirra Wirra Penley Coonawarra Cabernet, made by Ben Riggs and
98 Penley Cabernet (Reserve) made by Kym Tolley. These 2 wines are from the same paddock, and made by the 2 different winemakers.
The Wirra was better, great structure and balance, and beautiful oak. The Penley had more noticable oak, and not as well structured.

98 St Hallet Old Block Shiraz Very good, balanced wine.

98 Maxwell Lime Cave Cabernet Drinking beautifully

98 Willows Cabernet Lots of mint, and simple when compared to the Wirra Penley

98 Bleasdale Frank Potts Cabernet Blend. Very good, near its peak

98 Wirra Wirra RSW Fantastic Wine.

I was not sure whether to add to this thread or the Christmas Feast thread, but this one is higher up the list at the moment, so here i go.

Over the last few days at a few different locations...

The Berry Farm NV Strawberry sparkling: nose and palate of sweet strawberries (surprise!!!). Sweeeet and simple. Popular with non wine drinkers.

Xanadu Secession 2004 SSB: crisp and refreshing, pretty good with giant tiger prawns, not as nice as it gets closer to room temp (Xmas day @ sister-in-laws... power outages and thunderstorm! 35 and humid. Blah. Why are we getting Qld weather in Perth? :shock: )

Seppelt Millennium Release 1991 Sparkling Shiraz (FRS): I had a feeling this wouldn't have been good enough for an offline... fairly concentrated, not nearly as intense or complex as Show Reserve, a bit sweet on approach, a bit cloying, still with a bit of tannin bite though. Not too bad, but not great. Okay with turkey roll, went better with the cranberry sauce!
Not popular with those who liked the Strawberry sparkling. :roll:

Grosset Noble Riesling 1996: Probably past its best, slightly cloudy orange colour, reasonable apricot and marmalade nose, intense marmalade taste, with enough acid left to finish fairly clean.

Karriview Pinot 2001: Not bad, not great. A bit of strawberry, a bit of savoury cherry, unexciting nose, perhaps would be more complex in a couple of years. Have had far more interesting bottles from these guys.

Vasarelli cab 2000 (not sure which from range, CM product): a bit too acidic, needs time to settle still, or never had the fruit to start with. Not as harsh alongside steak, though.

Merum Shiraz 2001: Very nice! Should have bought a 6 pack last year when first tasted. Quite intense, smooth, at least a couple of years left to get better.

Rockbolt Cab. 2002: A bit harsh compared to the Merum, probably needed more air, also could do with a couple of years away. Has shown better. Once again, could be temperature interfering with enjoyment.

Killikanoon 02 Medley and Noon 02 Reserve Grenache.
The Noon's Solaire was just amazing. What a wine with a full, concentrated and rich mouth fill. As it quotes on the back label, with a hint of sweetness, this is just a great wine that i throughly enjoyed. At 17.2 %alc, it goes to show that some big alcohol wines do work superbly.

Glad you have your priorities right... I hope you can each spare a few hundred$ for the tsunami relief [a fraction of what was spent on a few bottles of fermented grape juice] :oops:

Drank copious amounts, but some of the highlights where:

Like most others: '94 Seppelt Show Sparkling (crown seal) - excellent.
'94 Petaluma Merlot: suprisingly good!
'02 Ata Rangi Pinot (Stelvin): Love it.
'99 Murdoch Cab/Sauv: excellent
'03 Torbrek The Bothie: Enjoyed it (a Frontignac?)
'00 Crosser Sparkling: Very nice.
'01 Stanley Brothers Semillon: very good.

And the one that nearly pipped the post for the best white of the year:

'86 Elederton Riesling: As superb an Oz riesling as I have ever drunk, absolutely beautiful.

2001 Chandon Vintage Brut - Nice and fresh
2003 Pike Reisling - Quite nice with the turkey
1999 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon -
1998 Lindemans Pyrus - Still very young
2001 Rockfords Basket Press Shiraz - Disappointed, seemed thin and short on the finish
2004 (Disg) Rockford Black Shiraz - Yummy, couldn't resist trying a bottle.
1998 Yalumba Sparkling D (Cabernet Shiraz) Interesting blend but nice.
2001 d'Arenberg Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viogner - Beautiful drop, really smooth.
2001 Cape Mentelle Zinfandel - A great Aussie Zin. Can't wait to try some 2002
