August 2019 Purchases
6 x 2012 Wynns BL CS.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
Re: August 2019 Purchases
Yes Scotty, spotted those myself...but seriously do not need any more BL...have TWE informed the chains that Wynnsday is now in October and not August...seems strange that they are selling discounted back vintages!!??
A mixed 2 cases of the Marius '17 releases.
Cheers Craig

x6 2016 La Ca' Nova Barbaresco
Re: August 2019 Purchases
LOL I know where you got those from.Scotty vino wrote:6 x 2012 Wynns BL CS.
I had a $ 20 voucher, so bought 12 x 2012 Wynns BL Cab Sav today.
worked out to be $23.33 per bottle....... cant go wrong at that price.
Makes you wonder just how much BL TWE produce and have stored. I mean we are what nearly 5 vintages/releases since then. Back in November 2018 they did the same deal for the 2010 Vintage.phillisc wrote:Yes Scotty, spotted those myself...but seriously do not need any more BL...have TWE informed the chains that Wynnsday is now in October and not August...seems strange that they are selling discounted back vintages!!??

A savvy purchase - a genuine bargain (even more so bought at the winery itself)winetastic wrote:x6 2016 La Ca' Nova Barbaresco
Re: August 2019 Purchases
Yes there is certainly a shed load of it...remember reading a story decades ago that John Wade was pumping out 80 000 cases in the early 80s and then was instructed to increase this to 110 000. I guess that's still the same or even more now, with increased acreage over the years. Always thought a little odd that as you say...at any one time you can see 4-5 different vintages on the shelves. Depending on carton configuration and case size (6 or 12) , there is 65-80 dozen per pallet...so 1000 to 1500 pallets a year!Rossco wrote:LOL I know where you got those from.Scotty vino wrote:6 x 2012 Wynns BL CS.

Agreed, almost at Langhe Nebbiolo prices. You could easily have an affordable Barbaresco cellar based on these and Produttori normale.Ian S wrote:A savvy purchase - a genuine bargain (even more so bought at the winery itself)winetastic wrote:x6 2016 La Ca' Nova Barbaresco

I'm presuming these Penfolds wines have been reduced in price significantly - rather than the aspirational RRPs?

Sean...in reference to your above post, would really like some St Henri...but not at $100!!! Will wait I think to see if any discounts are forthcoming.

Re: August 2019 Purchases
Hi Sean
Thanks for the wonderful detail.
I'm guessing Europe has dropped significantly over the last 2 decades (at least as a proportion of sales / profits). The Europe sales at $26.3m is strikingly small in comparison to Asia, yet also strikingly large compared to how much TWE wines get discussed on the Wine Pages (UK) wine forum and how much the wines we might discuss here have disappeared from the shelves. I suspect Pennies still has it's wine portfolio buyers at the top end, but I expect the bottom end of the market to be what's propping up that $26.3m
For many UK buyers, myself included, Pennies value departed many years ago. I'd still buy Wynns Black Label, but rarely see it, whilst I'd be all over the Seppelts Drumborg if it ever landed here (Seppelts in general rarely land here). The numbers you quote from days gone by are pretty close to the pinch point for Pennies I might buy (Bin128 and perhaps St Henri or YYA Chardonnay). I've not enjoyed Bin28, Bin138 and even Bin389 has left me wondering why bother, though I do have a final bottle buried in the cellar to see if extreme age piques my interest.
Regards
Ian

Re: August 2019 Purchases
My wife bought some electrical items from a well known chain and received vouchers to get a case of Wolf Blass Silver Range wine for ‘free’. I could choose between a Rose, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or Shiraz. Worth $300 according to the WB web site...we make a lot of Pasta sauce, so i told her to get the Shiraz. Can’t imagine we’ll drink a single bottle, but maybe we can take it to a BBQ with our beer drinking relatives.

Picked up a doz of the 2016 Kalleske Greenock shiraz. Imo the best bang for your buck Barossa red from a great year. I have more than once tried blind back vintages of this vs. it's big brother JG at $100 a bottle and none of us could pick a discernable difference between the two.

Bitten by the Etna bug, Brodie? Faro is a wonderful contrast to Nerello from Etna. I've presented 2013 Le Casematte Faro blind a couple times to wine groups and it was a big hit each time. Haven't seen Palari in Australia but I've always wanted to try.brodie wrote:3 x 2015 Benanti Etna Rosso

Well, they have been on the radar screen for quite a while - but have resisted buying due to having too much wine. Recently returned from a trip to Italy which kind of "forced me" to change my mind and buy some!Ozzie W wrote:Bitten by the Etna bug, Brodie? Faro is a wonderful contrast to Nerello from Etna. Yes the Palari wines look very interesting. The 2010 appears to be the current release of the Faro for the importer - which is nice.
