TN: Castello Di Cacchiano Gran Selezione 2010

Post by Waiters Friend »

Chianti DoCG seems to have three levels of classification - Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, and Gran Selezione. A couple of the young Gran Seleziones from around Radda in Chiani have impressed me, but tonight's tipple has a few years' age, and is all the better for it.

I am advised that 2010 was the best vintage in the Chianti region since 1999 and 1997. RP vintage chart indicates it was a top vintage. It might have also been a warm one, as this wine is 15% alcohol.

Garnet in the glass. Fascinating nose with developed cherries and plums, choc / mocha, a touch of rosemary and other (unidentified) dried herbs. Tannins are integrating well, and are in balance with the acidity. The palate shows more of the mocha, some developed (maybe drying out) red fruits, and has a delightful mouthfeel. Not too heavy - medium bodied - but a finish that lingers long.

It's delightful to try an older example, after so much spruiking of the ageing ability of the younger Gran Seleziones. This one still has years ahead of it.

Cheers
Allan
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
