Movie "Sideways" - reenactment Barossa Valley

Hi Guys

I am helping plan a Stag Weekend trip to the Barossa Valley, probably 3 nights, probably November of early December with a wine loving Groom to be and no doubt one or two others

I haven't visited the Barossa for 21 years, so my memory is a bit dim

I am looking for recommendations on:

1. Where to stay (not too outrageously expensive)
2. Places to eat
3. Wineries to visit that combine great wine with a great experience, where I can taste the good stuff not just the commercial supermarket bottling. I was thinking

If you really want to geek out, try arrange a visit with Alex Head (Head Wines). No official cellar door, but the man is a wealth of knowledge, makes great wine and is a lot of fun to chat with.

+1 Turkey Flat, Langmeil is also great.

For a true Sideways reenactment you will need to look for pinot noir, diss merlot, and think of drinking a fine wine from a paper cup, perhaps a Hill of Grace.

Funny thing is I've bought more merlot, well merlot blends than any other type of wine this year. Might have to bring a good one over as we all know it isn't Australia's strong suit

I can vouch for the 06 Irvine being the closest I have ever come to a drinkable Merlot. There's one left in the cellar, plus a 6 pack of the 2012, one of which is in my "taste now" box inside the house. Post to follow, but I still expect it will be an "almost" wine .

If you need a bit of exercise to clear the cobwebs after a heavy night, go for a drive up Mengler's Hill Rd and go for an easy walk in the relaxing bush of Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park.

Yes, perhaps I am being a bit harsh, the 06 Irvine was pretty good as have been a number of other vintages. I plead that it’s EV rather than BV

1. Where to stay (not too outrageously expensive)
my last visit we (3 of us) stayed at the old greenock telegraph station.it's a tad out of the way but you can walk to kalleske, the local brewery and the pub. MSV also very close. Also El Estanco is a little coffee place withing walking distance and the coffee was excellent.

2. Places to eat
Artisans, hentley farm (not sure with mates pretty fancy but bloody excellent), bakeries or go the BV farmers market and get your own gear and have a cook up. My mate brought up some killer bone in rib eyes and we got em going on the BBQ. Fire was raging, few reds, footy on.... can't go wrong.

3. Wineries to visit that combine great wine with a great experience, where I can taste the good stuff not just the commercial supermarket bottling. I was thinking

riesling freak...call john and make an appt this was my fave tasting one on one with john you'll be hard pressed to top it.
Tscharkes. Unbeatable VFM and wines are really good food wines for mine.

4. Any other considerations/ tips
Good thing about where we were staying was there was some decent wineries and coffee withing walking distance.
thats a great thing if youve been tasting all day and you wanna finish on a big tasting (kalleske) and let the flood gates open and stroll back.
The co-op at nuri, Foodland in particular has a great range of food and anything required. A mountain of gourmet cheese to choose from and for a local yocal supermarket it was pretty handy.

You mention you are going to Seppeltsfield. Can I insisty ou do the barrel room tour? You get to taste a 100yr old port and your birth year. It is a very rare wine experience.

Call up Eperosa make sure he's there. Excellent tasting and a top bloke. Just up the road from Rockford.
RieslingFreak and also Michael Hall in the same building. Again call to book. Nice sit down structured tasting.

The other one we liked was Atze's Corner.
For some good value wines - Tscharke.
