Keeping wine cool in a decanter

Post by Nick Wine Guy »

What do you guys do to keep wine cool in a decanter while it's out breathing for a few hours? I mean, cooler than whatever the room temp may be, if you feel that matters.

Sorry NWG but I suspect that my answer won’t be very helpful to you..... I put it back in my temp controlled cellar where it can wait until I am ready to drink it. Most reds are better at 18 degrees for my taste.

Perfectly fair enogh, Brodie. Do you mind it warming up over the course of say, a dinner? Or do you have dinner in there too? :)

if I know in advance my house will be 'warm', I usually use an unscientific method of putting a bottle in my wine fridge the night before and then decanting and letting it come up to temperature. Alternatively, I have a smaller decanter that holds ~500 ml only, I put in the fridge as needed.
Wine too warm for me, I find flabby and not enjoyable hence always seeking an optimum temperature. My 'fridge' method works for me.

Hi Nick

I find the act of getting up to go and get another glass from the temperature controlled cellar means I drink a little slower than with the decanter at hand....

Cheers

I leave a little space in the wine fridge for a smallish decanter. Pour & give it 10-15 mins for a bigger red, or tuck straight into it if it's a Pinot or Nebbiolo.

We do have a Portuguese carafe, which has a separate compartment so iced water can be added to that section to keep the wine cool. Not a fancy thing by any stretch of the imagination, but kinda cute and practical as long as you pour from the right side and don't empty the iced water over the dining table!

I have a small bar fridge I use (no food smells to taint the wine), put the whole decanter in there. Then take it out about 30mins before.

Sometimes I'll put a clean tea towel or something over it if I am leaving it out and worried about flies and stuff getting in. Then cool it down near serving time. Depends how hot it is on the day.

In summer I put reds in the fridge for about 15-30 minutes before serving. Whites at least 2 hours before.

I have no issue with putting the whole decanter in the fridge where necessary. The decanter I use for this purpose has a stopper.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

All good suggestions. I found that using one of those hot/cold packs out of the freezer to place the decanter on with a cloth in between worked pretty well.
