Re: January 2019 Purchases
The single malt gifts are lovely gifts, congratulations. Last year, when we were in Sydney, my better half got me a Lagavulin 200th Anniversary 8 year old as a gift. Oddly enough it was cheaper in Sydney than it was in Canada, a very unusual turn of events.

Good call on both wines. There's good VFM here, esp the cellar exclusive.Chuck wrote: 12 x Capel Vale 2017 Cellar Exclusive Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. To top up the depleted Sydney cellar. Good quaffer

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Re: January 2019 Purchases
After reading about the Chardonnay Challenge thread on here and the one on TWF (a must read for Chardonnay lovers) I decided I needed some more quality Chardonnay. I have always enjoyed a top end Chardonnay as much as a top end red.
3 x 17 Salo Chardonnay
3 x 17 Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay
6 x 17 Oakridge Willowlake Vineyard Chardonnay
Cheers

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?
Re: January 2019 Purchases
Wine spending to be cut to the bone this year (and wine drinking cut back too as we concentrate on trying to regain some fitness for a hiking trip). Last year I spent a fortune on the remaining "must have" flagship 2013 Auckland and Hawkes Bay reds as well as 2014 and 2015. I have a few things to pay for which means something has to go. It helps that rubbish vintages are now coming onto the market so hopefully FOMO will be minimal.
We have some big occasions this year. My twins turn 21 so out come the magnums of 1998 Coleraine, and 25th Wedding Anniversary so my small bordeaux first growth collection will become even smaller.
So I will be shopping in the $30-40 range sparingly and the expensive wine (aside from a couple of 08 Champagnes) is to be halted altogether
So this month:
1x 2017 Te Mata Elston Chardonnay

Re: January 2019 Purchases
I assembled a case and a half of mostly pinot & riesling from the Christmas jaunt around Tasmania and had it sent back to Sydney using the 'delivery dozen' or whatever the scheme is called whereby Tassie wineries will sell you a few bottles, then box up everything you have bought from other producers too and ship you the lot.
Odd random bottles from Lubiana, Simha, Pooley, Domaine A, Bream Creek, Freycinet. Averaged around $50/bt so not cheap but, gosh the wines are good from Tasmania these days.

I did something similar, but through the Tamar - mostly Pinot & Chardonnay. I thought the quality was very good across the board.GraemeG wrote:I assembled a case and a half of mostly pinot & riesling from the Christmas jaunt around Tasmania and had it sent back to Sydney using the 'delivery dozen' or whatever the scheme is called whereby Tassie wineries will sell you a few bottles, then box up everything you have bought from other producers too and ship you the lot.

Re: January 2019 Purchases
I just pre-ordered my duty free for when I return from skiing in Japan in February (vintages unknown - all to cellar):
Henschke Mt Edelstone
Wynns John Riddoch
Leewin Estate Art Series Chardonnay
Its pretty good deal considering you get 20% off the duty free price so the Mt Ed was $140 and the JR was $90 and the Chardy was $75. That is the only time I buy the top end Henschkes.
I also received an order earlier in the month from Hoddles Creek:
1er Chardonnay (to cellar)
Wickhams Road Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley
Estate Pinot Blanc
Estate Pinot Gris
Estate Sauvignon Blanc
Estate Rose

I bought a lot of wine from the start of the winter sales. Wolf Blass Grey Label 2013 becomes the house quaffer in quantity, PdB magnums, Boroli Villero 2006 riserva snapped up as well.

Re: January 2019 Purchases
"I will not buy anymore wine this year" he has been heard to say in public and on this forum..
Store clerk: "Many of the wines on this table were restaurant wines that were never on our shelves. For some reaon or another the restaurants no longer want them so we have put what remaining stock we had on clearance."
His resolution went down the drain and he bought:
2015 Ravenos i Blanc 'de Nit' Brut Rosé, Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, Spain (x2)
2015 Tiefenbrunner 'Turmhof' Pinot Nero Blauburgunder, Alto Adige, Italy (x2)
2013 Nik Weis St. Urbans-Hof 'Wiltingen' Alte Reben, Mosel, Germany (x2)
2006 Joseph Drouhin Cote de Beaune-Village, Burgundy, France (x2)
2015 Robert Perroud 'Pollen' Brouilly, Cru Beaujolais, France (x1)
N/V Gaston-Chiquet Blanc de Blanc D'Ay, Brut Grand Cru, Champagne - disgorged 2009!!! (x1)
2015 Domain Tariquet 'Classic', Cotes de Gascogne, France (x2)
2015 Megyer Tokaj Furmint száraz/dry, Hungary (x2)
Showing some restraint he passed on the 2004 Sabon Reserve Chaterauneuf.

I would have thought a Coonawarra Rosé would be more up your alley.
On a more serious note, I reckon Rosé cops way too much flak. Yes, there's a lot of rubbish Rosé around which is just made as an afterthought and in those cases the criticism is well justified. But there's also an increasing list of producers making well made Rosé. It's a style of wine that really suits our hot summer weather.
Re: January 2019 Purchases
Nil - wow, that's a surprise as I'd given myself a bit of free rein to buy in the January sales. No worries, in no rush to top up stocks.
