Just got these.

1 X 1968 Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon.
2 X 1972 Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon.

I'm trying to get enough vintages of these to organise a dinner featuring these wines.
I got a 1965 and 1982 a few weeks ago, I've also got an 1986, 1990, 1991, 1994 and 1996.
Maybe a few more from the 60's, 70's and 80',

Cheers Con.

Old ones come up quite often at Langton’s. 76 and 71 are both excellent when on song

No more wine buying as I need to draw down on my wine cellar. However Scotch is another matter:

Duncan Taylor Macduff 14 Year Old, Cask Strength distilled in 1998 - C$63
Duncan Taylor Mortlach 15 Year Old, Cask Strength distilled in 1996 - C$68

Yes, they were on clearance at an unbeatable price.

Cheers ............. Mahmoud.

Argh - caught myself out trying to lowball on a few auctions at Langtons and got carried away! On the bright side, I've got some half decent wines now, for some very keen prices:
  • 2008 Tardieu Laurent Chateaunef du Pape
  • 2015 Olivier Ravoire Gigondas
  • 2010 Casa E. di Mirafiore Lazzarito Barolo x 2

we've always liked frankland estate isolation ridge but it's been increasingly hard to find here in the states. A wine liquidator here, wtso, recently offered the 2014 vintage for $20 usd, we decided to purchase a case for our upcoming xmas party. TNs to follow.

best,

Hi Con
Interesting that they've straight away changed the name from Nervi to Nervi-Conterno. No argument that Conterno has far and away the greatest caché, even taking into account the usage by other Conternos in the Langhe. However in the region, Nervi has at times had a strong reputation, though recent years have been a bit of a rollercoaster. Compare that to the De Marchi (Isole e Olena) venture into Lessona, where the name is Proprietà Sperino and no mention of the family or the Tuscan estate.

More interesting for me is whether they can lift the excitement of these wines, and like other recent entrants in the region, lift the aspirations of other producers. Prices I'm sure will rise, but as long as they don't chase over-ripeness & slather the wines in new oak in the false pursuit of international appeal, then I'd be happy that the north of Piemonte could rediscover the prestige / market that's been lost over the last 3-4 generations.

Regards
Ian

Wynns Black Label 2016. Couldn't resist at the cheap chain price. Starting to get a lot of Black Label in the cellar but it bangs for buck too hard to say no and stop buying. When it is a quarter of the price of the Bin 407 it screams "buy me!".

If it were double the price of the 407, it would still be my preference!

In the thread about new year resolutions I said I oughtn't buy any more wines . However in another thread on cellar breakdown by varieties I mentioned that I don't have enough pinot noir. So what happens, I find pinot noirs on sale at unbeatable prices, from New Zealand, Italy, Canada and California.

Map Maker 2016 by Staete Landt,
Marchesi Pancrazi, a 2007 from Tuscany of all places,
50th Parallel, a 2015 from the Okanagan in British Columbia,
Merry Edwards Sonoma, the 2008 vintage in a magnum!

The Marchesi Pancrazi has an interesting story. In the 70s the Marchesi Pancrazi decided to replant a section of the estate. However the nursery accidentally supplied them pinot noir cuttings instead of sangiovese and it was not till 1989 that the error was discovered. Apparently the winemaker and oenologist Nicolo D'Afflitto (who is famously connected to the Frescobaldi estate and wines) convinced them not to replant and since then have been making pinot nero. I've no idea what their pinot is like but with a history like that and a back vintage to boot I had to buy a couple of bottles.

George, I couldn't resist either...not that I needy any more black label or Wynns for that matter, but through a third party site online with various coupons once my sons showed me ( someone should develop an APP, "don't get gouged, this is what you should pay"), another dozen at $18:50 a bottle!!

Thanks mate... hope your health picks up.

I have to stop buying wine until March when the ‘regular’ 08 DP comes out... (except for the Rockford order)...that said, historically, good intentions of this nature have come to naught...

Speaking of BL, I will be opening a 76 on the weekend- my favourite from this label
