It wasn't an Old World drinker arrogance of any sort, that isn't me, as Mclaren Vale is a favourite at it's best.

Good news Jamie, because that 2002 is, based on the 2003 I drank this year, is going to be McLaren Vale as its best. I hope this meeting of reasonable minds does take place down the line. The results would be truly fascinating.

Anyway, back on topic...

Drinking wonderfully, great acid and zip, tart/sour cherry, with blackcurrant through the palate. Great colour in the glass. Touches of licorice, and meaty notes. Nice clean finish that has you coming back for more, just how I like my GSM's.

PS: Has any winery in Australia or New Zealand reverted back to cork for any of its products?

Greenock Creek reverted back to corks in 2014.

Apparently Rusden also reverted back to cork.

To stay on topic, I just gave a bottle of 20 year old Basket Press ( cellared since release in professional storage ) to a friend who wanted to showcase an Aussie wine well-cellared a doubter of Aussie wines. Please cork, deliver ! Because old Basket Press, like many Aussie wines, is world class.

Funnily, I think the new cork screw is a good gorilla to wrestle out those old eaten away Sparkling Black corks- but that problem's gone away?

For those that got the gift from Rockford - was it in the 6 pack of Basket Press or did it come on its own?

I've put my 6 pack away and wonder if I should open it and have a look.

It was on its own. No room in a BP 6 pack to fit it I daresay with the wooden box and all.

I ordered a 6 pack of BP and 6 other wines and it was in a dozen box with the BP case box inside it (and being shorter there was a space to put the corkscrew box) if that makes sense.

Yes it was the Moda, the one with a caramel coloured label.
As for the three wines and should probably be in the drinking thread...they were all magnificent, and even better after a four hour drive with a lovely dinner in a great pub en route and a couple of refreshing 'arrival' Peroni Red lagers before setting up tent.

99 Wirra Angelus, a reflection of the oft maligned and sleeper 99 vintage in the Coonawarra, fantastic blend of MV and Coonawarra Cabernet...great secondary and tertiary flavours, palate that went on and on...just a great delicious old wine
97 Primo...my last bottle from the lads birth year and sadly he was not present for this one, earth, spice, currants, still purplish red. Its hard for me to describe the style, but certainly atypical Cabernet, not in the mold of YV or the Angelus, but a really interesting wine...you are spot on Ian, the father in law who only drinks 'rubbish' thought this excellent.
90 E&E, guess what actually had a bit of pepper, subsequent vintages don't have any and believe a label no longer in existence. Purchased 6 of these from a chain on West Tce in Adelaide in 1993 or so ( their whole allocation) for $30 each. Still a baby, perfect cork, great length, balance and richness, probably due to the large format, just took the Easter honours.
Three very good wines.

Just wanted to thank Rockford for replacing a 1996 BP the other day with the same year! We were out at Ripples Milsons Point and the somm came over after opening the bottle with a sad look on his face and told us the bad news.

Sharon from Rockford was most courteous and the replacement bottle arrived safely a few days later. Great service and their replacement policy balances out their non use of either diam or screwcaps as an alternative closure.

BTW, Ripples is a great place to hold an offline.

Yes, word is that Rockford hold onto a lot of their wine - and have for a long time - just so they can do that and service their Stonewall lunches. Only winery in Australia who would replace vintage for vintage I reckon. In that regard, they are a stellar outfit.

I had a corked 98 Cape Mentelle Cabernet a few years back and they replaced it with the same vintage extremely quickly. But I agree, there wouldn't be many who do it.

As for the corkscrew, I thought I hadn't got one and I did mean to ask when I was at the winery back in May. Glad I forgot to say anything as I found it in a 6 pack of Black Shiraz just the other day.

Speaking of Clare was up last weekend, Dinners at Seed, Magpie and Stump (Mintaro) and go to Koerner Wines, they have a pop up CD at the Hotel, and the Watervale Hotel, all fabulous.
Seven Hill luscious fortifieds and '18 top tier Riesling very good, Pikes for the Merle and the tawny and the Brewery, brought a case of the Pilsner, beer purchase in a wine area? KT in Auburn is fantastic, Kerri Thompson showed us 8 different Rieslings and about 6 reds, no one else there! Crabtree for some more Riesling, Clos Clare 2017 Watervale Riesling one of my top picks for the weekend...spent way too much but came home with another 5 dozen or so

Big fan of KTs for sure. Crabtree as well (more KT). Ahh so many choices up there it's often tough. Poor us.
I'll hit Grosset next weekend and see what else plays out. Sometimes just hitting Auburn is easy then turn around head for home.
I've had Seed on the list too.

Keen to do the Stone Waller Lunch with the Wifey at some point. Might wait 'til Spring is in full swing.
