Wynns Coonawarra NV PX

OK, I'm a bit of a Wynns fan, you all know that. Have just come back from an enjoyable Wynnsday dinner at Project 49 in Collingwood, tasting the new releases which was very good and which deserves a separate report. However, there was an unusual wine there which I also had the opportunity to taste a few months ago at an earlier Wynns function, and which is worth reporting in its own right.

All of the gnarly dude vines in front of the Wynns Gables CD in Coonawarra (between CD and Memorial Drive) are actually Pedro Ximenez. Having been planted between 1911 and 1917, they are all over 100yo and in living memory (Ie last few decades), Wynns haven't really done anything with them. However, in the noughties, they tidied up the vines a bit and in 2008 started a Solera of PX. This has been going since then and in 2018 they are about to release a NV Coonawarra Pedro Ximenez. Average age is about 5yo. Here's a pic of what was tasted tonight.

Light caramel colour, slight green tinge, Luscious, sticky, raisins, rich, caramel, did I mention sticky? A very enjoyable wine and a tribute to the vines!

Just not sure if Coonawarra is ever going to become renowned for pedro

The Pedro reminds me of the ill fated 1986 blue label Pinot Noir that Wynns made...never to be seen again, wonder if the vines were pulled out or grafted over.
I remember at the time something of a tasting note that resembled pink dish water!!!

Will have to ring the CD to see if there is a chance of getting any PX.

Next time you see Leila, tell her from me what she said above about Adelaide is total bollocks.

There's plenty of interest here for Wynns related events, but they are very rare and very poorly promoted - it's like they are content with showing up with a stand at the Coonawarra roadshow, and that's about it. We tried to get a Winemaker along to the AFWAC 2001-2012 Wynns Single Vineyard Vertical we organised three years ago, but after weeks of negotiations they bailed out on the day due to "other committments". Their attitude seems to be there's more $$$ to be made from promotions on the east coast (and OS) so that's where they allocate their time, Adelaide is not even an afterthought.

Sadly I have no doubt you are right. Keep pushing. I look forward to some more AFWAC nights when i retire back to Adelaide in a few years!
Leila was talking more about TWE events however, so yes, corprorate attitude I guess. In Melbourne we might get four tasting nights fully subscribed, Adelaide apparently struggles to get one.

Really appreciated the event that Ian and the AFWAC put on three years ago...and after tasting the 2012 Alex that all went offshore (for reasons completely unknown??!!) managed to get a dozen.
Yes might be a concerted effort to get an event here. The Ed for example has a tasting, about $50 bucks and they probably pay Sue to host it, plus a dinner afterwards and a night in a hotel...It was oversubscribed last year, with a waiting list.
I just wonder how a hotel on the gold coast had their Wynnsday event with Sue on July 10 (3 weeks before the 'official launch' and an eventbrite ticketed event), so anyone could go for just $25!!

Oh well maybe one day.

Can only shake my head. Was also at the Wynns event last year that Craig mentioned and boy it was packed. I first had a scare because I was not on Margot's list on that evening but luckily I had my online booking confirmation with me so all good in the end. How many people were there? 40 or 50? And they probably could have filled a room with a hundred people. So interest in Adelaide is no problem. If Wynns really had to cancel an event due to low participant numbers then it must have been promoted ridiculously poorly or it was deliberately kept secret. Well, there's the Coonawarra Roadshow in Adelaide on Friday the 17th August and if you are going you have a chance to talk to the Wynns folks.
