Hey Sam,

nice selection! Ridge would be my vote. Followed by a (young) St Henri 2010.

FWIW, we had the 06 Montebello over the Xmas period and it is closed down hard, rock solid and hugely tannic. I have 5 bottles left and will not go near them for another 10 years.

Thanks for the heads up.

Only factor is, this was from a clearance at the old Ultimo wine cellars post the Vintage Cellars acquisition. I also got a few other Ridge's and they showed a little warm and unbalanced and I can't quite shake the suspicion these could have been heat affected stock, hence why I wondered whether to open earlier than you might think??

I have 2 bottles.
Anyway I shall ponder that.

Interesting indeed, thanks for the note. Have you had one previously?? We had a MB 2006 back in 2014 and it showed extremely well.

thanks Tim. Yea, I have seen it about three times, similar notes. Your tasting is, however, very encouraging. I might have to have another look, maybe chuck it in the decanter for 3-4 hours beforehand.

I can tell you which one NOT to bring - Domaine A Petit Cab, had one yesterday at a tasting and it was bloody awful.

Haha, Dave. Your comments were hilarious. This may suit if meat pies are in the menu? Tomato sauce/tomato leaf. I think the 11 suffered from many factors. The 06 may be a different beast?

Unfortunately starting to look like a no-go for this. Thursdays are quite hard for me except once in a blue moon and I already have something on the following Thursday.

Have a great one!

The theme would be "Sam needs to open quite a lot of wine from his cellar as he only gets back to Oz once a year" ... so in other words, I would bring a disproportionate contribution and then others can bring random gems to shock or surprise us...
OK, Good..... random gems it is....... no cleanskins.
I think this guy has been missed on the bench!

Now that the date is a bit closer, things look good timing wise for Tamara and I.

Is there to be a theme at all around the wines? Or just "make sure its interesting"?

Some examples I could pluck from the cellar (most of what I have ready is Hunter Valley centric):
2003, 2004 Mount Pleasant OP&OH Shiraz
2004 Keith Tulloch Kester Shiraz
2005 Tinklers U&I Shiraz
2005 Leo Buring Leonay Riesling
2006 Lake's Folly Cabernets

Or on the heavier end:
2005 Dead Arm
2005 Murray St Vineyards Benno
2005 Marius Symphony
2006 Murray St Vineyards Greenock Shiraz

Alternatively I could bring some younger Italian/Sicilian invaders :)

Also guys, in terms of food, I am thinking we do the $80pp three course menu... some nice main course options that way, and the option of cheese for dessert. Seems quite good value to me.

+1 for the Marius, good age but not too much

We now have 3 dropouts from what I’m counting (Correct me please if I’ve Stuffed up)

We have 3 on the bench, in order;

Cleanskinlover
Nine redpens
Pat + 1

Not sure if cleanskinlover was actually putting himself up, funnily enough all the posts remind me of nineredpens cryptic communications

I was trying to keep the numbers to 12 people (which is what I have booked for) ... so that would mean Cleanskinlover would be elevated to the starting line up and failing that Nineredpens.

Yeah, pop me down. Will probably bring a white as it's looking very red dominant!

Sounds good to me.

Also looks like Tamara and I will be bringing the Leo Buring Riesling and Marius Shiraz.

Say what? I am curious if you did call as Optus seems to have somehow reset my account and removed voicemail.  I ahve been avoiding calling Optus and losing an hour or so of my life but I haven't received any voice messages in months.

You sure it was me you called?

12 is good, any more is a struggle
Almost certain nineredpens will squeeze in on a drop out, he nearly always does
Even pats a chance but he might have to tell his brother he has got a jehovas witness meeting to attend
(Hoping to god I didn’t offend any jehovas witness members)
