Orlando 1981 Vintage Port

Post by Mahmoud Ali »

1981 Orlando 'Limited Release' Vintage Port, Regional and Varietal Selection (17%).

According to the label this port was made from shiraz grapes grown in Orlando's Lyndoch vineyards.

This 31 year-old vintage port has developed a tawny character, the colour a terracotta with orangey-brown rim. Despite what appears to be a low alcohol level, the nose is mildly spirited with an ethereal perfume of fruit cake, spices, rum, and a sherried nuttiness. The palate attack is mildly sweet, tastes like a tawny and finishes with a sherry, madeira-like, dry finish. Quite unique I must say, and most satisfying. Certainly better than a 1974 Orlando VP that I had a few weeks ago that was sweet, overly thick, and dull, perhaps affected by storage issues.

This sounds interesting. I see some of these old Aussie "ports" show up at auction from time to time for pretty good prices but am always hesitant because I can't find any info on their quality. If I see one of these I'll buy it. Cheers

Normally I would say "Oh,oh!" as this would be competition but I will be returning home to Canada and will no longer be bidding. If the price is right, go for it. And good luck.

Cheers ............. Mahmoud.
