what is the most you would expect to pay for postage of a case of 6 bottles with a value of $380 from Melbourne to Gosford in NSW central coast? I know some wineries charge $10 or $15 and some charge zero over a certain dollar amount.

I was quoted $60 recently from Melbourne to the barossa.

Pretty sure wineries get a discounted rate through Aus Post because of the volume they have.

Smaller wineries, not so much. Recently paid $22 for a six-pack delivery. I suggested to the winery that they consider a slightly higher per bottle charge and reduce the rate as it was a real psychological disincentive to buying. Have seen charges up to $30. Which might not be so bad, but as I rarely order 12, makes it $5 per bottle on top of retail. Makes it hard to support the little guy in the face of the chains and the additional cost.

I have to agree with you Michael. Put a bit more on the wine's price and lower the shipping. It's a big psychological barrier for me too.
It reminds me of the 'Public Holiday Surcharge' at restaurants. Why can't they add 10c to every meal throughout the year and keep the price the same on the public holidays. Either that or print a public holiday menu with each item priced accordingly. Nothing worse than sitting down and reading the fine print on page 3 of the menu saying 20% holiday surcharge./rant

Have any of you ever gone to the post office with say, a box of a dozen wines, and posted it somewhere in Australia ?
It cost me probably $60 per box to post to Margs from Sydney some 5+ years ago. I was surprised at the time, admittedly, but that’s the reality of it. Don’t expect it to get cheaper. You probably don’t complain if there’s a $20 shipping fee from Hunter to Sydney for a dozen. Compare that to Yarra Valley-Sydney, or something similar. $40 doesn’t seem unreasonable...
Wanting such a convenient service at so little cost to yourself just seems unreasonable to me, tbh. Toughen up or start collecting cotton balls.

I asked because I got a bit of a shock when I got a members offer at $60 a bottle in a six pack instead of $80 and then saw the postage was $80. I buy regularly from a couple of wineries in the Yarra Valley, Beechworth and Mornington Peninsular and have never paid more then $20 and often free postage if over $200. It is a good deal on the wine but I just felt like I was getting ripped with the postage because they can.

It costs $40 AUD to have a case of wine shipped to my door in Hong Kong from the UK via reefer container. Air shipment double. Very good logistics with big merchants.

I think I said that the problem is a psychological one because so many wineries, etailers etc offer shipping free (over a certain amount) or at $10 or $12. I think I mentioned I paid the $22 for delivery. I made a suggestion as to how the winery might address the psychological issue. I didn't expect it cheaper and refused when that was suggested.

I am not sure why I should be collecting cotton balls, but since you suggest it I will get some to wrap some chill pills in to send (no doubt at outrageous postage cost) to you.

Melb to Gosford - Say up $30 would probably be reasonable. Would be more if wooden box etc. - $80 for a 6pk. That's a bit rich. If they are being charged that, or say 80% of that and taking 20% as "handling" that makes if $64....they are being ripped off!

Postage / shipping costs are high in Aus for a reason...its a damn big country.

For us to post wine from the Hunter (Pokolbin) to Sydney costs us approx $12 per dozen. There is a base "per item" charge, say $9 and then you get charged for every kg over 500g. If the parcel is 500g its $9, if its say 1kg then it $10 for example. Obviously this example isn't accurate but the idea stays the same. But this is with negotiated rates with AusPost. Others would be on other deals and it is all location and volume based.

For us to ship the same carton of wine to Brisbane or Melbourne it is about $19 but for Perth and Tasmania this is about $50. If it was going to say Darwin expect $75.

We charge a flat rate across the board for our customers. $10 for members, $15 for non members. Australia wide Per case. Be it a 6pk or a dozen. Good deal for all, especially those who live further afield.

Given the bulk of our customers are in the Sydney area we are able to subside our more distant customers but in a nut shell this is the cheap end of the freight market. You certainly couldn't drive from Pokolbin to Sydney to deliver a carton of wine for <$15.

It has been mentioned before, it is more a psychological thing, if I charge you $1 more per bottle, say $20 Vs $19 but give you free postage then I have $12 in my pocket to pay for the freight charge.

At the end of the day Aussies can be extremely tight and want/expect everything today or tomorrow at the latest at as low cost as possible. It is a huge reason our economy is going O/S and we struggle to find Australian products in our stores, we as a society/country, are just down right tight and lazy. T'is a shame.
