An order of 2015 Trapet red burgundies - Chambertin, Latricieres Chambertin Gevrey Chambertin Per Capita 1er cru and Gevrey Chambertin Ostrea Village. Been sweating on these becoming available since reading the Claude Kolm blog write up:

The upswing in quality also seems to be noticed by more mainstream reviewers like Allen Meadows and Neal Martin who are recently very positive.

I tried a bottle of the 2014 vintage of the Ostrea and it is high grade for a village wine so on my limited experience, the reviews seem to be on the right track.

This lot in Australia (I also purchased grand crus in HK with my HK based mate). The cost from the Australian importer to a retailer is $137.50 including GST, so price will depend on retailer markup. There was a 12 1/2 per discount for pre-arrival orders, which my source passed on to me (along with mates rates). The cost was about 25 per higher than the 2014 vintage and based on HK 2016 vintage en primeur prices for other recognised growers, I expect that the 2016 vintage will increase by about the same again, given the miserable yields.

that seems rather unusual. Importers don't normally sell to retailers with GST included, GST is calculated at final POS.
If the $137.50 is for the Ostrea, that price is simply absurd, even for Australia.

In my experience, the 2016 prices in Burgundy are only 3-5% more expensive than the 15's (ex-cellar), and the exchange rate isn't vastly different. However, given the smaller quantities, many importers will probably increase their margin to off-set their volume loss.

oh yea, and I have seen the 15's and 16's from Trapet.... wonderful wines right across the range, def a great buy!!!!
As usual, the shining light for me is his Ostrea, an absolute bargain for what you get. Interestingly, lately, I have preferred the Latricieres to the Chambertin from Trapet.

I've definitely had some success in terms of trying to buy anything but shiraz, but couldn't get away from the Marius and a few other eclectic purchases. I had some good luck, a liquor store changed hands near me and they cleared out all the discontinued stock lines - picked up 2/3 of the above list at around 50% (on average) of the usual retail prices at other stores.

For those that don't know some of the lesser known WA producers in the list, I think Rickety Gate (Cab Sav specialist for me but a wide selection / good quality across the board) and Picardy (pinot specialist but also good Bordeaux blends and shiraz) in particular are worth checking out if you get the chance.

Wrt your GST comment you are not correct. GST is not a one stage retail tax but a value added tax that applies to any relevant supply, including by an importer to a retailer. The GST charged by the importer to the retailer becomes an input tax credit for the retailer and reduces the net amount of GST that the retailer remits to the ATO after charging GST at POS.

Your assurance about the Trapet quality is welcome. I bought the Latricieres Chambertin in both HK and Australia (as well as the Chambertin in both cases and the Chapelle Chambertin in HK). I obviously can't compare Trapet prices for 2016 and 2015 as the 2016 is nowhere near release. My experience is that for domains like Hudelot-Noellat, Lamarche and Sylvain Cathiard in most cases the prices in the HK based 2016 Pearl of Burgundy en primeur offer are 20 per cent or more higher than the 2015 en primeur prices. The price of Coquard-Loison-Fleurot (CLF) rocketed from the 2015 to 2016 vintage but this is presumably because of the Neal Martin rave reviews. You may well be correct that much of this may be due to the importer increasing margins to compensate for lower volumes. I shudder to think what the 2016 Trapet prices will be in Australia.

Sadly, the other importers have followed their hikes, to price-match. PoB is a sad disease in Burgundy, and it will take the poor growers who got sucked in at least a decade to get themselves out
the 2015's from Trapet are on the market in HK now..... huge hike from the en-primeur price.

Latricieres $235 AUD (EP 175)
My guess is that the retail of 2016 Chambertin will be close to $700 in HK. Goodness, that will make it well over $1k in Australia

I am watching this discussion with much (dispassionate) interest! I am so glad that I retired completely from red burgundy buying in the last two years ago. Prices continue to spiral upwards. I totally get the reasons why but still.....

I bought heavily for about 15 years and then realized I had a an awful lot of burgundy to drink, mostly 1er and GCs. I like them with lots of bottle age, which is a good thing...

Thanks Swirler. Even after these purchases half my cellar is still Aussie shiraz. I'm trying to be more open to taking a punt on other varieties, although i don't think i would have got around to buying most of these wines if they hadn't been at such discounted prices. Funny enough sitting here now the only purchase i regret was the 2011 clonakilla, which was also the most expensive bottle!

This wine is a revelation in Australian terms. Never had anything like it before, and it is truly
remarkable. Would be a highlight for any blind/group tastings that for sure. No one would pick it.

Perfect match for seafood and you can imagine yourself sitting in one of those white houses in Santorini when
drinking it..... about as close as im going to get for many years!
