Sangiovese in Australia

Post by Wizz »

HI all,

Seeking the forums collective wisdom -

I tucked into a 2009 Felsina Berardenga Chianti the other night and got to thinking - I don't really know who is doing good Sangiovese in Australia. What are your picks? In the Chianto Classico style, and also Brunello?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

One NZ producer worth trying is Heron's flight with the very distinctive (non) label. The do at least a couple of straight Sangiovese wines, plus a blend with Dolcetto. Very much their speciality.

There's a comprehensive article at Wine Australia which covers Aussie Sangiovese.

Coriole, Pizzini, Castagna and Foster e Rocco are my favourites. Foster e Rocco also do a Rose made form 100% Sangiovese which is lovely.

I had a 2010 Castagna La Chiave Sangiovese a few months ago, didn’t take any notes but was very impressed.
It was under cork (diam), had some beautiful leathery flavours, spices and a nice long finish.

Second the Castagna Chiave.

I've enjoyed a few 08 iterations, have a few to go. Very choice indeed.

My favourite at a more wallet-friendly point is the Freeman version from Hilltops. Brian Freeman and family have been working on Italian varietals for a while now, and most versions are coming up trumps - Rondinella corvina is excellent. but their sangiovese getting better each vintage.

None for me are brunello or chianti like any any way shape or form
But I respect that

Castagna recent release I enjoy with airtime and food
I used to like Coriole but recent showings lack the hightone perfumes.

Thanks everyone,

I'm on Castagnas list and have bought a fair bit of la Chiave and un Segreto, Very good wines but not so italian in style. Will give a couple of your suggestions a look.

Michel any other than Castagna you would recommend trying?
