Hi Pete! I dropped by the cellar door on New Years Day. Spent some time chatting to Marcus the winemaker - a lovely and hospitable guy.

Really enjoyed the range of wines - I found the pinots to be more in the 'serious' style.

They have three sites - Berry's Creek, Tilson and Holgates Road, which go into the three single vineyard wines - Dirt 1, Dirt 2 and Dirt 3.

It was really interesting to see the display of soil samples showing the difference in the three sites.

For me, the Dirt 3 was the most complex and brooding of the wines - it's from the coolest site out of the three.

Incidentally, I really enjoyed their riesling and the shiraz was incredible smashable.

Will definitely keep an eye on these guys.

Tell me about the pinots?

All four of the Pinot bottlings were good. I will say the blend is not a greater for being a sum of the parts.

Two and three in my mind had a greater structure and complexity than the blend or 'one'. I will likely let them rest a year or two before having a look on them. I've had three vintages now of their wines and the Pinot were better than the whites with these new releases. I would have said they were on par previously.

Oh and we also got a bottle of the Shiraz. As previously noted it was quite 'smashable' as the kids say.

and a wonderful 'home kit' to replicate the sort of tastings he's run many times over the years. Indeed I wonder if these sets were originally borne out of a convenience for him of having the horizontals pre-packed for ease!

There is a reasonably large minority of wine geeks that would love to taste through such horizontals, so it's a slight surprise that more producers don't do something similar (accepting that few has 9 separate vineyards in the same region).

The hype over the 13's is interesting Ian. I haven't treied them yet. But in presenting PdB riservas in structured tastings, vertical or horizontal, they are terrific wines for a generic look at terroir. The wines are lack the brilliance of Giacosa , of course , but they present the terroir of Barbaresco covincingy. Soil, vintage and aspect.

In producing my write up for my 2008 nevent, I'm hoping to sum each Cru up in a sentence or two on this simple genre of soil, aspect and vintage. Aldo Vacca in my early research, does this brilliantly.

I had a free for all vertical with magnums at Bovio restaurant in La Morra a few years back. The young son of the family kept pulling magnums out until our bus driver ran out of duty hours. A big no-no in Italy. Very nice wines when mature.

I think Azelia is a producer that often slips under the radar. Great to be able to buy back vintages in Australia which come directly from their cellars. I've also got 2004, 2010 and 2013 Bricco Fiasco in the cellar.

From what I understand, Azelia is not as 'modernist' as they used to be, particularly with the Crus, but I'm not sure of the time-frame of their stylistic changes. I find it hard keeping up with who's modernist, traditionalist or a bit of both -- the goalposts seem to keep on moving.

I suspect you are aware, and maybe participated, but there was an interesting discussion on WB about the influence of the river on certain vineyards. Worth a revisit for that prep. That said, take the words of the expert on the vineyards!

Might be fun to menntion the 10th vineyard (Martinenga) which was wholly owned by Marchesi di Gresy, so lost to them when that producer left the co-op.

I love beserkers for the informed discussions but don't participate myself so much for a number of reasons.

It's a funny place - at times considered and thoughtful, a times a locker-room brawl. That said some of the more strident / aggressive personalities have moved on or post less, and the general move is towards more civility, though it will I'm sure always retain a feisty and reactionary edge, but also retain a lot of humour.
