Found some older vintage ports on clearance:

1997 Ferreira VP,
1991 Ramos Pinto VP, and
1988 Fonseca Guimaraens VP.

Each for less than $40 - magic!

You're probably right Ian, expecially since I don't know where they had been before turning up so suddenly.

Today I also picked up a couple of bottles of 2007 Grosset 'Polish Hill' Riesling ($24). Again, a wine meant to age but on the shelf for quite some time so probably more advanced than a properly cellared example.

Ian, they are still pretty young for vintage port. But if they were table wines....

1997 is indeed still young for VP, though I have found Ferreira a lighter style so would drink much earlier than the likes of Taylors, Grahams, etc. Likewise I've tended to see single quintas as earlier drinking propositions, so would expect the 1988 Fonseca to be fully mature. Ramos Pinto is the one I'm less sure of.

That's my thinking behind the comment.

My only experience with Ferreira was with a 1996 Traditional LBV and I recall it being rather firm and warranted cellaring. A friend whose port expertise I rely on tells me that Ferreira is a Portugeuse house which, like Graham's, has a sweeter style. Since it is only 20 years-old I expect it is still on the young side. Better to get to that '96 LBV before tackling the '97 VP. As for the Ramos Pinto I also happen to have a bottle of their '94 and '95 Traditional LBVs (the '94 bought at Oddnins in the UK) so realistically I ought to open one of them before opening the '91 VP. With regards to Guimaraens my experience tells me that some of them can be quite backward even relative to the Fonseca VP. I am refering to the '76 Guimaraens and the '77 Fonseca VP which I tasted side by side some years ago. I don't know enough about the '88 Guimaraens but it ought to be mature.

From what I've expressed above you might be wondering why I've got those LBVs in the cellar. The short answer is that I've been impressed with the two stalwart LBV houses, Warre's and Smith Woodhouse, whose traditional LBVs, bottled unfiltered four years after vintage, and how well they keep. As a result I decided to give other port houses' traditional-styled LBVs a go.

Ian, agree about Quintas. Generally earlier maturing.

Ditto. Interested to see how the 2016 goes. Still have plenty of the 2014 and 2015 but this won a few trophies at the McLackers wine show.

Cheers

Interesting threesome:
[b]'15 Eperosa Magnolia, 1896 shiraz vines
[b]'15 Eperosa LRC, only possibly 2 barrels made!
[b]'15 Heartland One, a Shiraz/Cab mix fom Langhorne Creek, challenging Wolf Blass?

12 x Swings and Roundabouts 2016 Margaret River Chardonnay. That just about rounds out the summer white quaffer purchases with a few cases of nice Watervale riesling as well. Standing room only in the cellar with boxes stacked up in the middle. Plastic in the freezer after almost melting down following purchasing around 25 cases of wine in the last 12 months. Have dropped a few kgs in body weight so all ready for a big Xmas/holiday season with family and friends in Sydney where I expect to put it all back on. Which reminds me I'll start the annual Xmas/New Year thread.

I wondered if anyone would get onto that :D ... to be fair I have enjoyed their Grenache in the past. Never to the extent of suspecting it would win the JW, particularly after they ruined their straight Mouvedre by dialling it back to a soft, pretty but boring wine.

My last wine purchases?

Torbreck Runrig 2014
Brokenwood Mistress Block 2011
Rockford BP 2011
Cartons of Devils Corner Riesling 2016
Squid Ink Sparkling Shiraz NV
Riesling Freak no. 3 2017
Grail of Lisa Shiraz 2016
Sharmans Riesling 2016

Now if I drink 5 bottles of wine a week with Janine, I have enough wine to last 12 years. Can't put all that in the Winnebago!
