Pinot Palooza 2017

Post by Diddy »

Hi all,

Thought I'd post some comments on my observations from the Melbourne edition of Pinot Palooza.

Really enjoyed the Melbourne venue this year (Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton) - very accessible by public transport and big enough that you don't feel entirely squashed in like sardines (over 4,000 tickets sold apparently).

There was some decent wines on show - standouts for me were Picardy - in particular their 2014 Pinot Noir and Curly Flat with their 2015 Pinot Noir.

I was a little bit disappointed that some of the more niche producers I like weren't there - particularly a lot of the ones discussed in the 'Crushing! Your fav NZ/AU Chardonnays and Pinots?' thread.

What were the highs/lows for everyone else?

Bumped into pc79 and his faithful iPad at the Sydney event so no doubt his usual comprehensive notes are imminent!!

4K people in Melbourne was often talked about! Wow, would be pushing 1k at Sydney, if that. Busy but a much smaller area as well they said.

Highlights for me were ( not all their wines, some only 1 was up there, but good producers in general ) were... in order of preference.. (and yes kiwi bias, I know).

Greywacke
Pegasus Bay
Schubert (marion15)
Valli (only the Waitaki 15)
Tarrawarra
Picardy
Yarra Yering
Rippon

Vintelopers 14 was getting a buzz but seriously? It stood out for being texturally different and very interesting that's for sure, but in terms of a 'good pinot', I wasn't a fan, esp at $100 or more. Also had to laugh that they were using cork for the 'premium' 14 and the bottle opened while I was there was corked. LOL.

Ooh, said hello to Gary Walsh, what a rockstar. :D

Very good event overall. Superbly organised and run. Not too crowded, excellent food/water/beer/toilet facilities. Plenty of solid yet boring everyday wines trying to hype themselves into $50+ pricing that they don't deserve but hey, welcome to Pinot!

Cheers,Tim

Thanks guys for the reports - as much I love wine events and Pinot, a tasting of just Pinot's was a bit too much. Carriage works is a great location and I was tempted to attend, however the date crept up on me. I was interested on your notes and look forward to pc79 impressions. Any general notes on Swinging Bridge - MAW(Orange region), as on previous tastings it is an interesting wine and good VFM, along with their No6 (Tempronilo & Pinot)?

Dave's best wine (IMO) is his touriga. Great stuff. Had his urban winery project red recently. TCA had stripped all the fruit.

I just cant get into the pinot though....and i have tried. Just not for me. Apparently it gets voted best pinot of palooza in various states, so im clearly wrong.....try the touriga :D

Good call on the Yarra Yering - forgot to mention them. Particularly like the 'light red blend', but that's probably cheating a bit for a pinot event!

Interestingly, the Vinteloper Odeon was my favourite wine last year. I recall it having some x-factor that made it stand out from the rest. With that in mind, I was really keen to taste their stuff again this year. Unfortunately the love affair is over at $120 a bottle. I definitely think my tastes have matured thanks so all the burgundy tastings and this just isn't my thing anymore.

This is a perfect way to describe 70% of the wine on offer. At the start of the day I was doing the polite think and tasting through the range of each producer's wines, but by the end I just had to politely ask them to skip the cheap stuff and go straight to the premiums. Too much wine and not enough time!

Lemme guess.... big structure with a whack of new oak and tannin?

It appeals to the local palates I guess, especially after they've tasted hundreds of other lighter wines.

From Vintelopers website:

"The structure is shocking. Muscular. A wolf in sheep's clothing, ODEON Pinot Noir is unrelenting on the palate"

"Matured in French Oak for one year. 50% new."

Too easy...

Spot on Odyssey! I recall caramel being the flavour that stuck out the most this year, no doubt thanks to all that new oak.

Interesting to see how much it's been worked in the winery, given they were spruiking an ethos of letting the terroir speak for itself.
