Natural of course. Lemon, rock salt. Winning!! Coffin bay the best for me.
Had my share of Coffin bay oysters last year in Pt Lincoln. Don't know what was more exciting.
The oysters or diving with the great whites!

I've been meaning to try the Planeta wine, as I've not been a fan of their international styled wines, but figured the Eruzione 1614 might be different (it uses native grapes for starters)
I picked up a bottle of the 2006 Basarin from a visit to Moccagatta, maybe about 4 years ago. Surprised they still have stock (assuming this was cellar door purchase). Interested in how you got on at Moccagatta and Albino Rocca (assuming you visited). The former I quite liked, but felt they needed to ease back on the (small) new oak. The latter impressed me across the range.
Trip report eagerly awaited

Thanks for this and the other advice winetastic. I will try to do that.winetastic wrote:If I were in your shoes, I would hunt down a single bottle of Passopisciaro Etna Rosso 2013 to try (available relatively widely). I think it is very representative of the lighter end of the Mt Etna spectrum and isn't massive like the 2014. Between that and maybe trying one of the SRC wines (which is stylistically richer), you will get a good snapshot of what its all about.Michael McNally wrote: This is the problem. While I am waiting for these to come into their drinking window, do I keep purchasing? What if I get to 5-7 years and decide that they aren't really my cup of tea and I have 4 dozen wines at various levels of maturity?
I guess I could try the auction market, but you never know whether what you get is representative.
The secondary market for Etna wines is very small, I have seen perhaps 6 bottles in total show up at auction this year.
Cheers

Looking forward to your trip report.
I visited Paros and Santorini, which very much have a predilection towards white wine production - mostly Monemvassia, Malagousia and Assyrtiko.
Xinomavro tends to come more from the northern parts of the mainland, which unfortunately I didn't get to.

The Planeta wines were an interesting counter point to the ones I tasted at Franchetti, Cornelissen and SRC - I certainly see your point regarding the "international style". It was interesting to note their 'flagship' wine is their Chardonnay from Menfi, Sicily. They're doing some interesting stuff there like riesling and pinot noir. I found their standard Etna Rosso a bit too 'round' for my tastes, whereas the Eruzione 1614 for me had a stronger sense of terroir, with a beautiful earthiness to it.
The 2006 Basarin was in deed from the cellar door - they were doing it as a special museum release. Moccagatta are still very much a modernist producer utilising mostly small oak. I tasted both the 2014 and 2006 versions of the Basarin. My notes suggest the oak was noticeable on the 2014, (but not too much), whereas in the 2006 the wood had integrated nicely and was quite an enjoyable wine with beautiful secondary characters.
Albino Rocca were another great visit that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'll put up details of all the wines in my trip report, but the stand outs were the Ronchi, Angelo and Ovello for me.
Re: September 2017 Purchases
The Eruzione 1614 red (and white for that matter) now in my mind for the next Italian order I put in...
Picked up a few today from a charmingly eclectically stocked local shop:
2011 Ch Lamartine Cahors (an old favourite)
1999 Monte Bernardi Tzingana (super tuscan blend by a Chianti producer - from the prior period of ownership)
The next two exploring Bojo with some cellaring time (the latter will be buried for a few years)
2008 Aviron (Potel) Morgon Cote de Py
2015 Depardon Morgon VV
2016 Ca dei Frati Lugana 'I Frati' (a wine I've been aware of for many years, yet had never tasted, so a bottle bought to find out)
2014 Cuatro Pasos (Martin Codax) Bierzo rapidly becoming a favourite, though I'm keen to try other wines made with Mencia
2012 Pinon Vouvray Brut (the NV an old favourite, now it's vintage dated, so will try and probably re-buy)
