August 2017 Purchases

Post by Ozzie W »

A birth year bottle from an auction last night.

1972 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Ullage above base of the neck, so looks like a well stored bottle. Fingers crossed!

Yup, could not believe it when I was offered a few bottles of the Rayas (direct ex domaine) here in NZ. You might well however believe the prices@!

Have you had much experience with Fenocchio Jamie? Got a bunch of their various 2010s (Bussia, Cannubi, Villero), but will not be trying for many years.

Hi Tarija
Good solid trad producer, fairly priced. A sound purchase if you like trad Barolo.

Hi Oz,

this thread on Wine Berserkers from Kent Comley may be of interest to you. http://www.wineberserkers.com/forum/vie ... 1&t=142793

"The 1970s - not the strongest bracket, cool decade, young vineyards, trend was for lower alcohol pyrazine wines"

"1972 - colour wise, more developed, fresher, leaner, more soy aroma, palate is a bit dried out and stalky, perhaps past its best."

Hi Brodie,

Thanks. I saw that thread on WB but it didn't deter me. I still decided to try my luck being a birth year wine and with good ullage. You just never know. The 1976 Black Label had I had last year was one of the best Aussie Cab's I've ever had.

I'm not expecting a 'wow' experience, but if it's enjoyable to drink then I'll be happy. I believe 1972 was generally not a good vintage in Australia. I'll report back once I open it.

Ozzie, I managed to get two magnums of the 72 through Wynns CD in the days where they were less fussy and corporate...if they old old stocks they sold them. I drank the second one about 5 years ago...still quite fresh with a lot of fruit and a lovely palate. If the bottle was looked after, think you will be OK.
My birth year was 65...generally regarded as a shit vintage, quite wet...the 66 is light years ahead.
Cheers
Craig.

I've only tried in their youth but seems another producer whereby quality advances and vineyard sites advancing well ahead of the costs of the wines. Just picked up 6 x 2013 Cannubi. Jancis is usually pretty hard on Barolo IMO but then again this cask review.

Like you I was long on 2010.

Jancis Robinson 17+… Barolo. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Mid to dark ruby with orange tinges. More depth on the nose than most Cannubi wines so far. Focused palate with plenty of fruit perfectly matched by fine, coating tannins. Impressive balance and concentration.

Apparently I was being provocative saying we'd both go long!

The number 3 has been my favourite of the line up in the past. Perhaps the best value wine in Australia when on sale. (And before I cop abuse, I reiterate 'perhaps').

6 X 2016 Block Nine 'caiden's vineyards' pinot noir. (St Helena, Napa V)
Tried this in a flight in a small wine bar in Akron OH.
Of course none left so shipped out from Albany NY.
For $12 US I thought it was an absolute steal.
Thankfully came packed in a bullet proof box so survived the journey back home no problem.

As a comparison small wanky wine bar had cloudy bay SB for $20 US which I see in DM
for $36. Hendricks gin another one. $30 US over there. 65-70 here.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
