Which Tempranillo

Any love for tempranillo here and which would you recommend? both local and Euro, although most of the examples that I have seen on the shelves seem to be pretty cheap weather local or import, so I wonder if they are any good.

Another vote for Mayford. Best Aussie Tempranillo I've come across.

For the Spanish stuff, my favourites are:

Marqués de Murrieta
La Rioja Alta
Olivier Rivière

Rioja ideas:

Lower price
- Marques de Murrieta Reserva $25-30

Higher end:
- Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Reserva 2004 $85-90
- La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 2004 $90 (890 is a lot more expensive)
- Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2007 $110 or so

There is a stack of Artadi on Langtons, more modernist in style.

Aged Rioja one of the last bargains in the wine world, wines coming out with over 10 years age.

Hard to argue against Mayford.

I've always liked the Pondalowie tempranillos although I've not had one for a few years.
The Simao & Co Temperanillo is worth a look too.
And if you don't mind it blended with other stuff, the S.C. Pannell Tempranillo Touriga is rather good as well. He does do a straight Tempranillo, but I haven't tried that one. Based on his other wines, I am sure it would go alright.

La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 (As stated the 890 is a few hundred dollars, but mind-blowingly good)

Those prices remind me why I never bought European wine in Oz...

I purchased both the Tondonia Reserva and the La Rioja Alta 904 recently for €22.70 and €38 respectively.... bizarre in Oz they come in at the same price. Shipping €16/18 bottles. Oh well, that will all end post Brexit.

The La Rioja Alta seems to get massive love in the US based on the number of Cellar Tracker reviews which come through. I opened one recently, and left the residual with my friend. His comment the next day was "it still smells like a jim beam experiment gone wrong". Suffice to say, there is a lot of oak in this style!

I am not sure what else is available in Oz these days, but in the past I definitely saw some wines from Muga around and they can be pretty good (and relative good value) too.

It's either buy European wine or Australian wine. The latter isn't exactly cheap for the classics too! Even a wine like 389 is pushing 80-90 bucks for a new vintage release.

Please don't rub in the price in the UK

I had a Tempranillo from Sanguine Estate a couple of months ago that I bought there in about 2007. It was bloody good.

In addition to the other Riojas listed above, I do like the rather modernist Remelluri Reserva, which should be similar to LdH Bosconia in price (which is also worth considering)

I just bought a Quattro Mano Gracia 2013 which is a bit more expensive than most local Temp at $48 and was a very nice wine, also bought a Brown Bros at $14 and will try that over the weekend.

We had a Myattsfield 2009 Tempranillo (one of their first vintages) last night. It was medium to full bodied, spicy, star anise (at least, that's what my partner reckons), and lovely dark and red berries. Bottle age development, so some savoury notes as well as a hint of leather. Very satisfying.

Had my first Pecina recently, and it impressed. Despite being relatively new, very much in the traditionalist style

Just for you really - picked up a couple of bottles of the 2000 reserva from Hard to find wines in the UK, reduced to £12.49 a bottle, which is odd as it's not a new release, but did still seem on the upslope. I'm glad I added them to the Musar white/pink order!

I tried a 2016 Serafino Wines Temp from McLaren Vale last night. Nice wine. Good fruit, savoury with good drying tannin. Should drink well over the next 3-5 years and does not cost the earth.

I see a MARQUIS DE MURRIETA Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 1986 on the latest wickman auction. Hmmmmm was hoping they went unnoticed ! One of the most intriguing white wines I've had. It's $500 Aussie up here a bottle !

Saw that too. Put a bid In both bottles at the initial $76. It jumped to $213 in about 6 minutes.
I was hoping no one would notice it. I guess that was wishful thinking.

Goodness me, another argument in favour of buying wine to cellar on release. I have a bottle of 1985 Murietta Reserva on the tasting bench (mainly because the ullage is just below the shoulder) that I picked up years ago for a little less than $25 Canadian. Admittedly it was not the Ygay Gran Reserva but if I remember correctly the Ygay was about $50 back then.

Popped in to Margan on the weekend - their Tempranillo Shiraz 'field blend' would be a decent $10-$15 midweek quaffer with a few years in the cellar - pity they're asking $40 for it!

Also a "ripasso" shiraz, but no Amarone-style semi-dried wine to create the leftovers for it to re-pass through... so it's just a Shiraz blended with some grapes from a later vintage? Either way, it's an okay $30 shiraz, but again they're asking $75! Tell 'em they're dreaming!

Suggested alternatives for the above: Cosme Rioja ($13) and a Koltz Wizard (proper Ripasso-style shiraz for ~$30)

Different wine this one Mahmoud. This is the white gran reserva. Only about 8000 made. Only vintage of white gran reserva I have seen them make ever. Retails for over $500 each.

Yes I would have gone further if I knew source and provenance . Remarkable wine . Would have loved to treat generous friends to an experience with this wine .

Just got a bit suspect about it at the 250 mark. Why would it be in oz? Hmmmm. The risk wasn't worth it .

I though the same. Why/how did this get to Australia? Why was provenance unknown?
It was only released not that long ago-bottled in 2014.
If it had the tick, the bidding would have been very interesting.
