It's a rare month when Ozzie doesn't open up with a Royal Flush.

I've got a bunch of Campanian wine somewhere here - Tecce Taurasi 2011 for sure, others I'll need to hunt down when luggage joins me.

Will be very interested to hear what you snagged over there. I suspect there will be some very good wines we never even hear of. At least I've heard of Tecce - is it the Poliphemo?

So true.

And if you think he goes out too hard early, he surprises everyone when he relieves Mt Etna of all its stock late in the month.

I bought

4* 16 Domaine Bordexia Blanc, a mensang blend from Irouleguy in the west of France. '15 sold out in 2 days at my merchant and I rushed this order in the day the wine became available. Hope it's as good as they claim...

2* 16 Clos des Briods, Muscadet - one of the great wine bargains of Europe

I'm hoping this years Wendouree allocation will be paid for by my mother in law to be as a wedding present...don't think there is much chance though...
This is my church, this is where I heal my hurts.

6 x Hochar Red 2012 (Chateau Musar's 2nd wine), one that we had a few times in the previous decade, but hadn't seen it around for ages, so I was instructed by the brains of the operation to rectify that.

1 x Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese 2007 Dr Hermann. I've not heard of the producer, but happy to take a punt for ~ a tenner. I've been lucky with german producers I've never heard of.

1 x 2016 Adega de Monção Vinho Verde Muralhas de Monção, to explore a little more. I believe this is a much more early drinking wine than the last vinho verde I tasted.

After virtually a blank in June have come out of the gate quickly to make up:

12 x Capel Vale Cellar Exclusive 2015 Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon
12 x Mike Press 2015 Adelaide Hills Cabernet Sauvignon.
3 x De Bortoli Black Noble.
5 x De Bortoli Rococo NV bubbles

And bidding on a few auction numbers however bidding is fierce.

It was Ian, that's the one that got heads nodding in furious agreement at the Enoteca where I purchased it. Yes, as you say, a whole world of wines that mostly don't escape the region, so I just dove in head first. Discovered that the alarmingly high quality of food kind of sidelines wine discussions - at least in my experiences there.

Naples was stunning on a multiplicity of levels - as was my brief dip into the Amalfi Coast.

But back to wines:

2011 Luigi Tecce POLIPHEMO Taurasi
2010 Migliozzi "Rampanuici" Falerno del Massico
- 90% aglianico, 5% primitivo, 5% piedirosso - recommended by a restaurant I ate at and road tested - absolutely sumptuous this, I'd like to try more blends next time I'm there. Similar in Buenos Aires for me where a judicious malbec blend can lift a grape.
2016 Benito Ferarra "Vigna Cicogna" greco di tufo - the grape that was the real revelation for me - it was pretty hot all the time I was there, so a white wine for openers always made sense. And i didn't have a greco I didn't enjoy. My fave Enoteca recommended this - the single vineyard iteration of the standard greco I'd been enjoying. Will hold this one until summer here, and perhaps a recreation of the superb fish dishes of Naples!

Cheers,

Yes the food can be exceptional, and radically different to the equally fine food of Emilia-Romagna or Piemonte. For all the fame as the home of Pizza, and a noted leading region for pasta, the seafood is exceptional, but the fruit and veg likewise, with the use of lemons in many dishes very skilled.

Amalfi Coast was my first foray into Italy, back in 1990 (2 weeks in Ravello). We've returned on two other occasions, and despite there being evident tourism, it's remarkably easy to escape the crowds or just take in scenery and be a world away.

Was gifted some 'white label' wines by a winemaker out of the Adelaide Hills experimenting with alternative blends and varieties:
2016 Tannat, Shiraz & Mondeuse Blend
2016 Shiraz Mondeuse Blend
2016 Mondeuse Rose

2013 St Hugo Barossa Shiraz - saw this heavily discounted and grabbed a bottle
2013 Pauletts Wines Andreas Shiraz
2016 Vanguardist Wines Riesling
2017 Longview Vineyard Iron Knob Riesling
2016 Hahndorf Hill Gruner Veltliner

Mixed case of 2015 Wendourees: Cab/Malbec, Malbec, Shiraz/Malbec & Shiraz (I did not order the straight Cab or Shiraz Mataro this year)

Discovered a new supplier of Mt Etna wines today.

2 x 2015 Le Vigne di Eli Etna Rosso
2 x 2012 Le Vigne di Eli Etna Rosso Moganazzi
2 x 2014 Le Vigne di Eli Etna Rosso San Lorenz
2 x 2013 Le Vigne di Eli Etna Rosso Moganazzi

Le Vigne di Eli is a small estate on the northern slope of Mount Etna. It was established by Marco de Grazia, owner of the nearby Tenuta delle Terre Nere.

Intriguing - perhaps they don't want to do a 100% bottling, so use a fantasy name instead?

No answers here Ian. Barbara Sandrone looked after myself and family on a few visits and hosted my wine group so I'm happy to support Sandrone with whatever is happening ?

AG – (Feb2017)
The 2013 Barolo Aleste is a wine of striking purity and nuance. It is also one of the most finessed, vivid young Barolos I have ever tasted from Sandrone. The translucence of Nebbiolo comes through loud and clear. Freshly cut flowers, mint and finely cut fruit are some of the signatures. This wine has developed beautifully in recent vintages as the oak influence is less than it was just a few years ago. Beams of tannin and bright, salivating acidity add finesse to this translucent, exceptional Barolo. Aleste is the new name Sandrone is using for the Barolo formerly known as Cannubi Boschis.

From auction:

1 x Coriole 2012 Solistist McLaren vale Shiraz
2 x Chapel Hill 2012 McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon. They do it so well.

And

Another 12 x Capel Vale 2015 Cellar Release Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon because it's so approachable now and should go another 5 years minimum.
12 x Kilikanoon 2015 Golden Hillside Clare Valley Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon. These guys are very impressive.
