Wine Suggestions

Post by winelover2017 »

Hi Everyone,

I am planning a birthday party for my fiance and need suggestions on wines. Most of the guests, well, are men and I want them to have several choices - not so ordinary or common wines. It's a wine slash birthday party! Your suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi WL2017
We could use a few criteria to help narrow it down. e.g.
- How many whites / reds / fizz / dessert wines
- Per bottle spend (e.g. average AUD30 a bottle or more/less?). If we can pick out some really good cheapies, we will, as it allows you more freedom on the other wines, or just the chance to save a few bucks.
- Any known favourites, so we can riff on that theme

Would you be up for ordering from site owner Gavin? He's good enough to host / tolerate us, so it's good to see him get some reward. If so, let us know and we can pick out some interesting wines off his list.

regards
Ian

Fizz:
White: Arras (has a bunch that start from the mid $20's all the way to $130 for the EJ Carr)
Red: Rockford Black (Need to be on the list or via auction or generous mates), Seppelt has a couple of options one at $20 the other at about $100.

White:
Tyrells have a whole stable of Semillion at every price point, all good wines. They have good Shiraz too
Tahbilk Marsanne Good with age on them. Available at under $20 and the 1927 Marsanne is mid 30's.
Kumeu River (Kiwi) chardonnays at every price point, higher in acid and very french in style.

Red:
Marques de Murrieta is a Rioja that has a Reserva (Under $30) and a Gran Reserva Especial (about $120) that are outstanding value and I love them.
Wynns Cabernet (available at all price points from mid teens to over $100 and all good representation of the Coonawarra Cabernet-Plenty of older stuff at auction that is priced better than current retail.
Moss Woods and Woodlands have a variety of Cabernet at various price points and represent their regionality well.
Barossa Shiraz-Take your pick of the eleventy million on offer.

Some of the Pinotphiles can give you a few suggestions, but I like Pooley (Tas) and Paringa Estate. Pooley may be a bit more difficult to find, but both have has a bunch at different price points.

Desert:
Nobel One
An SA Tawney
A Rutherglen Muscat (The 'Rare' ones blow your socks off) or Topaque

The wine world is your oyster and opinions will differ greatly as will budgets, but that list should keep most regular people interested and provide some discussion points as well as introduce a few to something new.

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

How much time do you have before the event? Auctions for example take a bit of time.

Any particular styles in mind, regions etc, or just a mix?

I liked "eleventy million". Such an accurate estimate!

Looking at the other posts, I'd have to agree. I've alerted Gavin.

But what are they selling? Its mysterious. Intriguing. Frankly, now I want to buy this... magical.... wonderful.... errr whatever it is!

Usually you get three or four innocuous but vapid posts like these to establish the presence and then something "A friend suggested WOLF BLASS YELLOW LABEL... what are your thoughts on WOLF BLASS YELLOW LABEL? I am pretty sure people love WOLF BLASS YELLOW LABEL"

Sam, take your point, but yellow labels of the 70s and 80s were simply glorious wines...current versions don't come close now
Think Hunter's suggestion has just about broken WL2017...they'd have a team searching google on that one

Wasn't picking on the Yellow Label per se, just a generic example big company wine that might have employed the spam bots to get a better search ranking!

I do get grumpy about such posts, as what happens next time a genuine new forumite comes along with a query? We'll doubt them, even question whether they are a spammer. Hardly the friendly welcome we like to give.

This is not a spam post. I was happy reading through your suggestions until I bumped into the spam comment. I simply haven't had a chance to check on your replies because I was out for days.

Thank you to those who took time and gave suggestions. Your efforts are appreciated. I don't know much about wines so I'm thankful for your responses.

Thank you, Rens! This is quite overwhelming; thank you for the detailed yet clear suggestions. I've noted them done. I still haven't finalized them yet as I am still checking other options.

The first Wolf Blass wine I drank was a 1983 Yellow Label Shiraz/Cabernet and a very fine wine it was. I bought a bunch and drank them over several years, with each succeeding bottle being more enjoyable.

Mahmoud.

I hope you'll forgive my cynicism, but when your second post here resurrects a random 6 year old post that just happened to contain a spam link, then I start to get a bit suspicious...

It's okay; no worries. I randomly check both the old and new posts to get more insights and ideas.

Hi Winelover2017,

Your problem is you have just been too nice to people and positive in your posts. You need to post a few paranoid, rude, cynical, angry, jaded and "big business" winery / critic hating posts and you'll fit right in - just like the rest of us here...

That way we won't suspect you are spam at all and you can get on with promoting your preferred wines trying to get people to confirm they also like them to validate past purchases and the usual future purchases of the same vineyards / wines based on fear driven narrow mindedness - just like the rest of us here...

:)

Welcome to the forum.

Kind regards
Ben

p.s. I am not trolling, I do not believe the above post applies to fellow forum members (although obviously some / all of it does apply to me) - this is just my sad sense of humour. Apologies in advance for any offence caused to fellow forum members / readers.
