April 2017 purchases

Post by phillisc »

Been years since I kicked one of these off...

6 Pikes The Merle 2012 Riesling.
Found a few of these at a large chain and they were quite good VFM.
Will have one very soon.

Cheers
Craig.

6 x Forest Hill 2011 Mount Barker Cabernet Sauvignon. Don't know much about this southern WA area and these were bought on spec.

Found a couple of magnums of 2009 Dandelion 'Lionheart of the Barossa' Shiraz at a keen price so decided to take the plunge. I liked the back story of the Lionheart with it's old vines, basket press, and maturation of mostly old oak. I have only ever had their 'Wonderland of the Eden Valley' Riesling and it was quite good in the dry austere style and in need of plenty of aging.

I'm intrigued as to what these would go for at auction. Overpriced IMO on release, definitely at the modern end of the scale, however putting aside my prejudices of preferring a more traditional profile, I think their reds are good, contrary to some rather vocal voices that used to slate them on a US forum. They aren't trendy to like, hence a feeling that there may be decent buys to be had at auction.

as an aside, their moscato d'asti (Bricco Quaglia & Biancospina) wines are very good indeed. In a style of wine I've yet to see made badly in the region (at least to my tastes), they just seem to have that extra touch of creamy texture.

$137 including buyers premium. These are for sale retail at $250/bottle retail, so a good buy.

Hi Ozzie
Yes that feels fair. When I'd tasted them before, I liked them but felt they were close to double the price they should be, so I reckon you've got them at a fair price. I suspect they'll be relatively open, but always wonder how they'd age in the longer term.
regards
Ian

Spinetta has a brilliant cellar door
free tour tasting and bread local cheese etc
well worth it
the EVO is one of the best on the planet
the riserva chianti is very good
the barolo are very big juicy masculine - generous in style - just not my favourite style
the tasting of the individual grapes allowed to go into chianti is fascinating

I visited the (beautiful) winery and restaurant late last year, and picked up current releases. The 2011 should be a beauty.

Following the Howard Park Chardonnay tasting last month (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15481) I have purchased 6 each of their current release (2016) Chardonnay and the Great Southern Riesling. These are consistently good wines, year in, year out.

A doz of the 2014 Woodlands Margaret. Already have some, but they rate this year, and on the back of an amazing 2004 recently, it's a really easy choice.
