Best value/discount cellar doors - Barossa

Post by Seller_door »

What Barossa cellar doors offer purchases at a discount to retail? For example, the Rockford basket press Shiraz sells at a good discount. Are there any other similar examples?

Craig, thanks for your response. Caveat - I spend most of my time in McLaren Vale and surrounds and visit the Barossa infrequently. I'm looking for feedback for a trip this week and was hoping for some information to supplement my preferred wineries.

Thanks in advance, Ian.

Personally I'd always focus on what you like, over saving a few AUD. An enjoyable visit to taste wines you will like, definitely better than saving a few bucks on something you might not get excited over. A discount is nice, but certainly in other regions, it can be quite rare as wineries don't want to undercut their retailers. I would definitely be more excited by wineries that had smaller production cellar door only wines and/or museum releases for sale. Something that when you pick up the bottle to drink it, you'll instantly remember the cellar door visit where you got it.

So what Barossa stuff do you like and what sorts of wines are you seeking (or a few McLaren Vale wines / cellar door visits that have excited)? This should help the gang give you some cool suggestions that might not even be easy to find in the normal bottle stores :)

I don't know about discount but I rate Tscharke as the best value in the Valley.

Thanks for the feedback team. I've never visited turkey Flat but have sampled a lot of their offerings so it's on the list.

Favourite McLaren Vale offerings:

SC Parnell, especially for the grenache / grenache blends, views and enthusiasm/knowledge and chats of Steve.
Chapel Hill for their delicate (relative) Shiraz, consistency, value (and quality of their quaffing wines) and their knowledgeable cellar door staff;
Olivers Taranga for their restrained but prime example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Thanks for your feedback! :)

Try Penfolds,
the Magill CD had 6 packs of bin 28 for $150, same as Bin 23 and 138. 150 was $330 a 6! ($540rrp)
Surprisingly good prices that arent advertised externally.
