Do You Keep Your Corks?

I'd expect most end up binned but other than that, what do you do with them? Do you collect them? Or do you use them or re-purpose them?

Mine end up in the bin but I worked with a Stonewaller who was collecting his Rockford corks. I don't recall if I found out why but I suspect it might be to cover the front of his bar? I've also seen Christmas wreaths made with them.

Redav, I have about 30 years worth (not all saved, the generic JBM for example go the way of the bin), but others where winery and said wine are stamped then yes most of these are still with me...never counted, but I have about 20 or so shoe size boxes stacked in the shed. Plan to actually make a cork board or two at some stage.

Yes. I have put them on the ceiling in the cellar. Looks pretty cool but a lot of work. Labour of love over many glasses of wine!

In Croatia they throw them in the pot when boiling octopus. They say it helps tenderise the flesh but I have no idea if there is any science to back that up.

I keep them occasionally but I don't really know why.

As for the original question:
- yes to stopper the normal half-finished bottle (we're lightweights!), though the brains of the operation sometimes gets over-enthusiastic on the tidying up in the kitchen, so we have a cheap plastic lever stopper if the cork has been binned.
- One single cork retained, from a 1927 Dows port. In part retained for the memory of trying to decipher what it said, as the wine bottle was unlabelled and the person who brought i9t wasn't too sure what it was.

No other than three which I stick miniatures to. I found that it makes them easier to hold and turn them while painting them.

As for cork collecting. I've started a collection along the top wall of the cellar for S#%ts and giggles.
I think some have fallen over the back into the sub and beyond.

Yes...but it takes a lot longer to fill up the jar each time than it used to...

Collected corks in a plastic bag for the Girl Guides for many years and it's still in the cellar. Bugger if I know what they were going to do with them. Not many wines under cork left which is a good thing I think although based on experience there are a lot of ticking time bombs (TCA, premox etc) down there. With my 60th coming up soon some may go off in some prized old bottle.
