p.s. I presume you've tasted the 2003 Paolo Conterno? A vintage I treat with huge caution, but there are good wines out there. I'll be interested in how you get on with the 1995 Magnum. A vintage that was a small relief to the growers after 1991-1994, but quickly forgotten about once 1996 came along. From the little I've tried it's a decent, (in modern terms) comparatively lightweight vintage, that could hold very well.

No, I have not tried the 2003 Conterno. It is a Ginestra Riserva, great vineyard, great traditional producer for my palate so I'm taking a punt. I've had good experiences with 03 from good vineyards, good producers ( a snapshot to the warm future perhaps ). I'll swap 3 with friends so the punt isn't that huge especially considering their low price of about 35£. On that note, it i's getting harder to back fill Barolo/Barbaresco retail these days, so happy to get the Pira for the cellar and Altare 08 will be fine in good time. The magnums are cheap I didn't worry about vintage to be honest, and having been the recipient of wonderful hospitality from Nonna at Silvio Grasso it's nice to repay in as a small way- they will make cheerful school night drinking with my wife, coravin a couple of glasses and slow-ox the rest Tuesday to Friday and enjoy the development.

Mostly different vintages, but two substitutions (made without agreeing them with me ), and two wines which were lesser wines from the same producer . Will see what they propose. Tempting to say "just come and collect the wines and refund the money", but let's see what they suggest.

Had something similar happen to me. Advertised 2014 and got 2015. They took them back, but could have saved a lot of stuffing around on both our parts if they had made a quick phone call.

Some retailers rely on a pretty high "I can't be bothered with the pain of rectifying the situation" threshold. Wouldn't think it would work with wine buyers though!

Remember the golden rule - There's no such thing as too much wine. Do the math -number drunk every week X 52 divided into current stash. I always think I have too much but doing the math shows a mere 5 years supply and I intend living a lot lot longer.

And it only gets better with age particularly the stuff you buy.

Plus one...with all that bubbly purchasing there would be sufficient for a weekly bath!!!

As far as current stocks are concerned at 3 bottles a week I will run dry a tick over 26 years...hopefully nursing homes will have cellaring facilities by then.
