We are heading to Tassie in Feb/March for a few weeks and need help both general and specific on wine areas and good cellar door/restaurant experiences and must do things to do. This is my first trip to the Apple Isle and want to make it memorable. Initially heading to Hobart for about 4-5 days and then it's a blank page except for some busing walking in the national parks (info on accomodation on these would be great too. We will hire a car. Tamar Valley looks the go so far. Fat Pig Farm lunch, MONA are already on the list.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated be it wine/food related (wineries will only be a few days) to those must do activities that you remember well and would do again in a heartbeat.
Thanking you all in anticipation
Carl

Based on my experience Tassie is so diverse, you really need to base yourself for a few days in an area to truly soak it up, you can easily lose time travelling around the winding roads, hence I'd suggest try and not do too much and always allow extra travel time over and above what you think.
All non-wine related:
Port Arthur
Coles Bay / Wineglass Bay - great walks and if warm enough a swim in wineglass bay
Hollybank Tree Top Adventures - loads of fun
Sisters Beach or Boat Harbour - nice little places on the NW Coast
The Nut at Stanley - quaint town and nice B&Bs to chill out at
Strahan - Gordon River. Great seafood also.
Wine related:
Can easily spend a few days in the Tamar, I've always had good experiences at Dalrymple Vineyards, Holm Oak, Pipers Brook and Bay of Fires. I've always camped under the Batman Bridge whilst in the area (free camp ground near the river).
Coles Bay - there are a few smaller wineries in this area in particular Freycinet Vineyard & Devils Corner. Plus you are close to Wineglass Bay.
Enjoy

There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Additional to the thread that Scotty pointed out:
- Derwent Estate and Stefano Lubiana both a very short drive out of Hobart, two of my favourite wine-makers incredibly accessible.
- https://www.gasworkscellardoor.com.au/ superb way to taste regionally with keen staff. Not sure where you are based, but it was a 10 minute walk from my hotel, and took up, ahem, "too much" of our Hobart time.
Enjoy!

Thanks all for the quick responses. Some great vino information to go on. More info on things to do would be appreciated. To assist we are looking to head north west from Hobart to Cradle Mountain area and working clockwise towards Launceston before heading down the east coast which I believe is just awesome. Not sure if we can make Strahan or Stanley unless anyone thinks either is a must do area. Working to book in for a lunch at Fat Pig Farm (re SBS series) which should be interesting. Most produce from the farm and nice Tassie Pinots and sparklings. Only a short drive from Hobart.

Black Cow restaurant in Launceston, very reasonable markups and great food
Source at Mona - simply fabulous food and winelist
Don't dismiss the smaller wineries and the up and comers - many of the bigger ones charge or are like tourist hell-holes
Goaty Hill send their wines out regardless of the temperature so avoid ordering any from them. Others I ordered from respect their wines more.

Agree that Black Cow was great (you really need to book in advance), also some seriously good looking burgers in Launceston at St John Craft Beer Bar. Enjoyed the tastings at Moore's Hill, Delamere and Bay of Fires, Chromy was OK for lunch but wines for me aren't that exciting. Wanted to go to Stoney Rise but they were closed for winter over the few days we were in Launceston. Was a good food market in Launnie as well on a Saturday morning. Enjoy!
