Shadowfax 2002 tastings
Shadowfax 2002 tastings
Armadale Cellars are having tastings for Shadowfax 2002 One Eye and Pink Cliffs Shiraz tonight, unfortunately I am heading out of town, can anyone can give tasting notes? cheers Colin
Let us have wine and women, mirth and laughter. Sermons and soda water the day after.
It was about to piss raining and this little munchkin was about to turn into a pumpkin so that my SO could go out on a girls' night. However, I garnered a quick impression: these are very good wines, but bravely priced. Like the 2001s I again preferred the finesse of the Pink Cliffs ahead of the boldness of the One Eye. There is a lot less difference between the two than there was in the previous release. They are generally fine tightly fine grained linear expresssions of Heathcote shiraz.
There is a great deal of sophistication to like about them esp Pink Cliffs. At sub $40 they would be outstanding, but at $60+ they are somewhat untried at the track (cf Zuber); untried at the distance, with a new trainor and a new jockey. At best an each way bet. Keep safe. There is better in the field at the going odds and I don't punt. (It's just the silly carnival and I gave $10 to the Roman Arch pool today).
For an unproven 2 yo the connections to this stable think they have a cup winner. They're not Doriemus; rather they're dreaming...
of a Group 1 win. Not yet.

Thanks for your track notes, sounds like the Cox Plate is a few years off for One Eye and Pink Cliffs.
I was at Mornington for the weekend, not for the races but they were on there, perhaps this is where the Shadowfax stable should have been trying their new colts in the 2YO maiden; you gotta start somewhere.
$60 on the nose for a win is definetly a speculative bet with a lightly raced 2YO. But in their favour is the huge $$$ investment in the stable and the pedigree of the breeding stock which has one of the oldest bloodlines in Heathcote, and lets face it the area has produced some outstanding performers in a short time. Like New Zealand I think the soil has a lot to do with it, produces firm, strong but classy nags.
Might be better to see how One Eye and Pink Cliffs develop over the next year or two by the sounds of it; place bet at this stage would be appropriate I think.
cheers
