Yep - that's how it worked.
Well, as far as large offlines at Chinese Restaurants with multiple tables this is usually the way it works - the relative lack of space/table to put bottles and crowd noise makes it bloody difficult to try and do something more formal. It does put a lot on emphasis on trusting people to do the right thing and not go overboard, then again it usually tends to work out okay because if someone ends up being a dickhead they are not invited back
Offlines at more formal venues (like the last Sell a Kidney offline at Publisher, and the old ones at Soho and the Alehouse) were very different as we had a private room (or similar area) and were able to present the wines in a far more structured format. In short, horses for courses...
Whilst I am keen to do offlines in Adelaide I feel the numbers need to be limited but limiting it to say 8 is problematic. It becomes a little impersonal over that and I understand the issues of a noisy atmosphere and multiple tables. Just a wee dram of each wine is not preferred. At least a half glass of each would be good with the opportunity to retaste a bonus. Not sure how this can be achieved. With such a small city we certainly do get the numbers going.
I like the 98 theme for the next shindig as I have a John Riddoch screaming to be opened.
Anyhoo that's my 2 bobs worth. Would love to see Ian's notes. Some sensational wine put forward. Ian, come on down.

Given the volume of wine on offer, I don't think anyone went away thirsty and there was at the least a quarter of a glass of each wine to try. I've always approached Offlines as a chance to taste different wines. Note, I say taste, not drink.

Point taken. Perhaps I just like to drink them as I prefer to experience a wine over a period of time. Too many wines at one time can confuse me. I guess that's my cross to bear.

By the way Jamie Hong Kong...where has your mate gone to ...was it Felix if I remember?? with the son who is a chef. I always enjoyed his musings, even the spicy ones, not banned was he.
