I make exceptions for exceptional wines of exceptional value. Have you had a Nerello Mascalese from Mt Etna before?

If you like wines from Mt Etna, then SRC most definitely needs to be on your radar. I believe 2014 is the second vintage for the SRC brand. The owners are mentored by Frank Cornelissen, so I can see a great future ahead for their wines.

Good memory, Benchmark. That post-dinner drink was a 2013 Girolama Russo 'a Rina Etna Rosso.

Some of the makers use little sulphur and make wine "naturally". They are not for ageing without risk eg. Cornelissen. Passo definitely ages - we have had the 2007 more than once and the 2008's are still relatively youthful.

Frank Cornelissen is a zero additions zealot. What's interesting about his approach is that he uses heaps of technology and is obsessive when it comes to cleanliness and maintaining perfect conditions during wine making. He's made mistakes in the past, but he seems to have worked out how to make ageable wines without using any sulphur. For example, he used to blend across vintages which caused issues, but has stopped doing this. Perhaps the environment of Etna is somehow conducive to making wines this way?

Well, after nothing for over 2 months, I picked up a few today. Eclectic for sure, but that's as much a reflection of the diversity in the shop I went to, as my own tastes.

A gamble for sure, but at least up to the 1960s they aged remarkably well with proper complexity. A gamble mainly because the style did change, I believe in the early 1970s
