Aus election 2016 - what to drink

Post by crusty2 »

I was thinking of a high powered shiraz, WDC Duck Muck, has it's detactors but enough stuffing to please the masses and dull the senses of the cognicenti, but decided on a Tawny Port. I think the result will not be fully appreciated for a month and a Tawny is the only wine that would stand up to an extended campaign.
What are you drinking?

Bit late now but I decided to do a hard road test between Riedel and Zalto instead of watching the election results. I concentrated hard to find the winner between the two.

What a disaster of an election. No real outcome. Another senate requiring the skill of cat herding. 3 more years of nothing looks on the cards with a deteriorating budget bottom line and no real positive or coordinated policy. We just need a strong majority government in both houses of either persuasion to provide direction. The election of Pauline Hanson and the Human Headline says it all. Hinch has never voted in his life so why should anyone have voted for him. He'll be demanding a register of pedofiles before voting on anything. Pauline is now saying no more muslims as well as asians. Popular politics is alive and well I'm afraid. And the X team make it to the big league with a gaggle of I don't know what. A long straight whiskey the order of the day. Make that a bottle!!

Hi Carl
Yes, internationally there is a genuine fear that populist right wing (at the moment 'fascist-lite') banners are being followed. There are lots of subtleties and sub-plots, but I sense that the terror attacks (and a feeling of helplessness about them) are at the core. There is a real fear about the parallels with Europe in the 1930s.

(apologies to Gavin for encroaching into such a potentially divisive subject)

regards
Ian

Ended up opening a 1996 Fox Creek Reserve Cabernet, a good head banger to try and numb the mind of the days events.

She can't be saying no to Asians? With one in two Aussies in the government pocket in some way, Asian money is going to be needed for countless generations? And I just don't understand the wider view that doesn't see a necessity for foreign investment. On a small scale, I myself am out of here if Labor prevails and have been looking elsewhere with some of the Liberal policies, let alone bigger players.

And the anti-Islam vote in the west has become an ignorant left versus right shade of politics instead of proper, unhindered discussion of what seems to be the heart of the problem, Saudi and the Gulf states ( powerful commercialism ) exporting a sect of Islam that probably should be branded state sponsored terrorism.

Jamie, your second paragraph is SO damned correct it hurts. Wish we could hear that more often in the run of daily conversation, but the bi-polar bloody MSM in Australia - most places really - won't allow it.

And don't worry, Pauline's left anti-Asian sentiment behind a long time ago. Seen the folly of that one, punching down in a new direction now.

Sigh.

Had a 2008 Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz in honour of Peter Slipper  . Nice drink but not sure it will get much better. I'll be drinking my remaining bottles sooner rather than later. Lacked a bit of X factor for me. Typical cool climate Shiraz. Red fruits, spice and a slight hint of pepper. 3/5

Cheers

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

Everything we opened to drink on election night was corked, sour or lacking in fizz (one of my homebrews unaccountably had almost no bubbles - only 2 years old :x). I have no idea why...

Continuing my wine drinking homework, I cracked a 15 Santolin Heathcote Nero D'Avola which worked pretty well with the couch pizza in front of the telly.

By no means a heavy weight, but far more attractive than what I was seeing in front of me on the box. Danced as lightly on the palate as the ABC's Antony Green's fingers on the touch screen graphics.

Gave up on the election about the same time the bottle ran out.... :?

14 of us had a 'French Kiss' dinner party - and no, the car keys were not placed in a bowl.

Some of us prepared 5 courses of French cuisine, matched to 18 French wines. Some of us peeked around into the next room to check the TV occasionally, and then ......
