What about something like this:-

https://www.cambuy.com.au/products/lowe ... vAodsFAA7Q

Should be okay for length but may struggle on width.

Looks like a camera lens case is worth investigating further. It's wide enough to fit a Zalto Burg. Will drop by Michael's Camera which is round the corner from work and take a look at what they've got. I can just imagine the strange looks I'm going to get from the staff when I bring in a wine glass so I can check if it fits .

I think an aluminium "briefcase" style case with a foam insert suitably cut for the glass shape would be uber impressive

You are channeling TORB mjs. Not sure if there are aluminium cases wide enough though.

I use the Riedel case if I need to carry more than one Zalto Burg glass and although it does bulge, the Zaltos are actually pretty strong laterally where the angle is so I think they are pretty safe from damage.

At the same time I can't believe Zalto or someone else hasn't jumped on this as it is such an obvious need - the number of Zaltos around now would make first in the market a goldmine.

Well, I bought a Pistol case...which if I just use a very thin foam on top and bottom, will hold it very well...but it is really bulky....

I haven't modded it (or even brought it to Australia) to fit exactly right yet...it was just so ginormous I didn't really want to carry it around....

But realistically, it is probably the right size necessary to carry these things..and that's the scary part...I'm just hoping this Wine Check Carry thing is wide enough....

If you are carrying a gun case around in the city you'll probably be jumped on by Border Force

Yeah well, that's what my wife said...I doubt people will see it as a gun case though...it just looks more like I'd be carrying around a drill..

Maybe that's an idea for an offline? Road testing various glasses.

I too have been thinking about upgrading from the Maxwell Williams we've used forever to something nicer now that we're appreciating our wine more. While we'll try other varieties, we mainly enjoy shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, zinfindel and some GSM's and almost all that we drink is young (mainly because the oldest we have is some '09 and we almost haven't tried anything older, I hope this changes though).

Initially I had wondered about the Zalto Bordeaux and then the Universal and as we don't like high alcohol wines, we wouldn't want to accentuate what alcohol is present. Mind you, I guess one trick is to consider the serving temperature.

So I'm wondering whether the Universal is still a valid choice or should we consider Riedel or something else?

If you only ever use one glass the Zalto Universals are the one to go with. I generally pour most guests the Riedel Ouvertures though, as the price is 1:6

edit because I'm an idiot

Universals look so narrow, I can only imagine they would be ideal for aromatic whites. Surely the bigger glasses would work best with most reds and barrel matured whites?

Has anyone tried them, Zaltos, in their dishwasher?

Yes..you're better of using a dishwasher..just make sure they're stable and not going to get knocked around...

There are also things like this..

http://www.amazon.com/Quirky-Tether-Ste ... dishwasher

I haven't used them but some people do...

People have broken them in the dishwasher but you're more likely to break them washing by hand...

Always in the dishwasher. I broke one in a airbnb house's dishwasher because the base was knocked off the stem when I close it , but that wasn't the glass' fault

Always. Just make sure they are stable and can't fall over.

I put my Zalto burgs in the top rack of my dishwasher and wash using the dedicates option. I can't sit them vertically due to their huge size (23cm tall), so they sit on a roughly 45 degree angle. They come out perfect every time.

I must say, this is an interesting topic. It has in part prompted me and I have just ordered a pair of stems from this site. I must admit I'm confused as to why some of you would only drink top wines from these glasses and not all your wine. I'll also be interested to see if I can detect any real difference between the Zalto and Reidel. Anyway, now have two glasses on the way and really looking forward to not only drinking out of them but painting them as well.

I don't know if people are only drinking top wines out of it...I pretty much only use Zaltos now....which has basically made all my other glasses useless...I use other glasses just to test things out more or less...

There is definitely a difference on the nose...whether or not there is a positive difference will depend on the individual wine....

Yeah I have a set of universals at home and work (and a set of champagne flutes at work)and use them for quaffers through to the good stuff. Like Polymer I now have a cupboard full of glassware that seldom sees use unless I'm having a party. But that is ok, I'm enjoying using these which is the main thing.

I've only suffered 2 breakages in over a year. One I knocked off the bench, one I broke trying to wash it by hand. And they always get washed in the dishwasher, so I'd say literally a few hundred glasses through the dishwasher without a breakage.

Similar, have a range of Riedel Vinum Bordeaux, Vinum XL and Veritas Cab Merlot, Veritas champagne, Riedel Riesling, various flutes and a gazillion other party glasses Riedel Ouverture, Riedel tasting, ISOs, the odd Spiegelau and Schott, cupboards are full!! Fortunately haven't broken that many recently, mainly hand wash here. Vinum Bordeaux at hand atm!

So the Universal vs Bordeaux decision has been made for me, I scored a pair of Bordeaux's for zee birthday. We keep a gifts register in Dropbox which tracks our gifting (OCD I know!) but we have a page of suggestions and I'd not removed Bordeaux as I was still unsure. Oh well, I'll try the V&A Lane in them :)
