Hello all
I was hoping to get some help on the order of a few wines I have for a 50th dinner.
The line up is:
1986 Magnum Grange
1991 Magnum Grange
1997 Hill of Grace
1990 Wynns John Riddoch
2001 Magnum Lakes Folly Cab
Should any cabernets be in the line up with grange and HOG ?
Needless to say, the main course for the dinner is rib-eye.
many thanks for any advice you may be able to impart.

Wine order for a 50th dinner
At every turn, it pays to challenge orthodox ways of thinking
Re: Wine order for a 50th dinner
If flights I'd go as below...as I reckon the 86 will appear younger than the 91. If singles then drink in same order as listed.
Flight 1
Hog
Flight 2
Folly
Riddoch
Flight 3
91 Grange
86 Grange
Flight 1
Hog
Flight 2
Folly
Riddoch
Flight 3
91 Grange
86 Grange
Re: Wine order for a 50th dinner
PS what time did you want me there?
Re: Wine order for a 50th dinner
Some lovely wines there, another option could be to swap Dave's flight 2 and 3 around, as I feel the tannins on the Riddoch and younger folly might be more powerful than the Granges, and that's saying something! Coconut alert on the 91 when I last tried it, but I hope they all show well for you. Congrats to the birthday person, hope it's a big rib eye with that lot!

I'm with tigger on the order:
Flight 1
Folly
Riddoch
Flight 2
Hog
Flight 3
91 Grange
86 Grange
Flight 1
Folly
Riddoch
Flight 2
Hog
Flight 3
91 Grange
86 Grange

LOL, no, I said swap flight 2 and 3!
I was suggesting....
97 HOG
91 Grange
86 Grange
90 Riddoch
01 Folly
HOG may be more elegant, then the sweeter oaky 91 Grange followed by the variable 86 Grange which (if in top form) will get the best showing in terms of palate fatigue and tannin build up. Then the mighty 90 Riddoch with it's wall of tannins (hopefully softening by now) and finish with the magnum of younger Folly to sup away happily on. Probably as many opinions as people, best way to tell is open them and see how they're showing! Decanting time may dictate the order as well.....
Cheers
Tim
Re: Wine order for a 50th dinner
I actually think
Lakes Folly as the lightest
90 Riddoch as the last one I had the tannins had softened quite a bit but who knows.
HOG
Granges
I'd open all of them and try though..and really, it probably won't matter all that much...

Re: Wine order for a 50th dinner
I would go
Folly
JR/HoG
Grange
Folly will be a little "lighter/elegant", I would start with that. Could even split JR and HoG into two. Agree, the 86 Grange has been variable for me, quite disappointed in some I had a few years ago, but others have had differing experiences, but I think you have to finish with both Granges.

Right. I'm not with Tigger. My dyslexia playing tricks again.
