Recently bought a few bottles of expense Euro wines (>$100 per bottle). Despite asking the retailer not to ship until cooler weather (and the retailer happily agreeing) they decided to unilaterally ship it to me during a week in which Melbourne had 40+ weather.

Which was decently 'on track' of a few wines I posted that I wanted to buy in 2016 in a previous post here. I'm aiming to try to stick to that buying plan, ensuring my focus diverts away from more current vintage Barolo & Barbaresco, which I normally struggle to resist.

Rossco, a punt worth taking on the 88 JR, have had half a dozen of these over the journey and still don't think they have peaked...88 is a bit of a sleeper of a year for this wine, reminds me a little of the 99.

As I have brought my last retail purchases of JR, I will be back filling on these earlier vintages.

I bought £2000 worth of quaffers below from the amazing UK sales. A bunch of friends do similar so we mix and match and diversify. It works very well. Rhone still out of fashion. This is where the bargains were. Any one else in HKG reading please get involved!

I'm tossing up on a six pack of Giacosa Asili Risrva 2011 which though lost in release amongst the Burgundy EP campaign seems to have inflated in price significantly and I may be better back-filling.

The Fleurs da Mai is now an annual buy- - the vineyards fall just outside of Cote Rotie proper so its $20 Cote Rotie of sorts. Beautiful quaffing!!

With the prices of back vintages JR, it would seem crazy to buy current retail.
I guess the risk is storage/provenance/condition is basically unknown, but the reality that I have found very few auction
bottles to be bad/off/thrown away.....lets hope I dont Jinx myself with this purchase!

Some brave/foolish gambles in there, but I do still appreciate wines on the downslope, so hopefully most still have something to say, and feeling greedy I hope one or two shine.

Yes I'd agree that JR has always seemed substantial enough to cope with a little mistreatment, but also less likely (than Grange & champagne say) to be bought by someone who doesn't understand the perils of bad storage. JR, in my mind at least, has always been one to cellar and if you really want to drink on the fruit, there are many better options.

After trying a bottle of 2014 Neudorf Moutere chardonnay I picked up a couple more. This wine achieved some notoriety (or status) as Kiwi critic Bob Campbell's first 100 point NZ wine. Absolute BS as these ratings usually are for young wines but still very good in style and for my palate better than any of the Aussie options in the same price range.

Yes if you mix and match with a few guys you have a wonderful mix of wines. This is the best way to quaff in HKG and the most expensive wines are the $100 a bottle Cote Rotie magnums.

They will store them for 9 quid per case pa (in the UK). Then you need to sweet talk a tourist into bringing them back for you
