Burgundy

Post by Benchmark »

Hi everyone,

I hope I am not breaking any rule(s) with this question...

I was wondering where the forum Burgundy drinkers acquire their wine?

Time to expand my tastes beyond Australia and New Zealand.

Any tips for the novice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Benchmark
Not to discourage you, but you could have answered your question on the first line. It could be rude to nominate other retailers on this site being hosted by Gavin from Auswine.
I am in a similar situation to you, taking my first delivery of a mixed discovery dozen from a retailer in Melbourne. I think if you do enough googling you will find there are a couple of specialist retailers in Melbourne & Sydney (with headquarters in Melbourne). Let us know if it is worth the cost. On my experience entry level is around $50, which can buy some excellent Aussie Pinot & Chardy, however something worth trying to expand our experience.

Thanks Phil.

I was reluctant to post.

It was only that Gavin has very little in the way of Burgundy on his site that I took the risk.

Perhaps you could PM the details of the Melbourne retailer as I am also in Melbourne.

Hi Benchmark,

I'm a little way down the Burgundy road, and I've found personally that it can be one full of expensive lessons for the unwary. I tipped a 1er red burgundy down the sink just two days ago because it was truly awful

In addition to Phil's advice, consider looking for a burgundy tasting class or course to help get you started. As Phil says the price of entry is high, and its worth narrowing down what you like before splashing lots of $,

Thanks Wizz.

I had a feeling it was a minefield.

An expensive one to boot.

I will track down a tasting group if I can.

In the meantime I will grab a few bottles this week and let you know how I go.

Thanks again!

Given Auswine has no Burgundy I could see, no conflict. Try Grand Millesime (online importer based in Melbourne).

Why not start a burgundy tasting group here on Auswine. Anyone in Melbourne that want to join Benchmark?

I was thinking the same swirler.

I am happy to organise something if there are enough interested parties.

I'm in.

I reckon the wine should be the star. Better that the cost of the wine be the main expense of the evening not the food. Casual learning (in a relaxed environment) the aim.

Therefore, how about inexpensive Chinese roast meat? Duck with pinot. Chicken with chardonnay. A simple, but good match. Should be minimal corkage, too. This would encourage more people to join us, too.

Once we've covered the lower levels and villages, we could have a fancy shmancy French dinner when, for example, we progress to Grand Cru night, say, next Christmas

Jumping ahead a bit, I know. :) But just wanted to throw a few ideas into the pot.

This is sounding good.

Love your enthusiasm swirler!

If it is OK with you guys I will start a new thread with a more explanatory title?

I will add you all to the list of possibles and start some conversation covering some logistics.
