Rens

I was interested in your comment about the 86 Moss Wood being over the hill. What's was the bottle's provenance? Further, 86 was a poor vintage in MR which is likely a contributing factor. Reason I ask is that i had an 83 Moss Wood last year and it was still singing.

Regards

From a good cellar, not mine though. There was nothing obviously wrong with it- it was just past it in a big way. Reading cellar tracker, the only note there (made in 2007) suggested that it needed to be drunk then as it was just holding in there. Given eight and a half years more bottle age, the wine I had mirrors those sentiments. Over the hill with hints of its structure remaining, but very much tertiary. Not a hint of fruit and the alcohol and acid sticking out a bit. I like my cabernet on the older side of things, but even for me it had gone past the point of being good.

I've heard some outstanding things about the 83 and others in the 80's. I guess the 86 was not one of them...

Just the two of us for Christmas this year.

We slow roasted a shoulder of pork on the BBQ. The pork was from Jonai Farms near Daylesford VIC. Old breed, Large Black. It was beautiful.

We opened a bottle of 2003 Lakes Folly Cabernet. Then a bottle of 1999 Yarra Yering Dry Red No1. Then a bottle of 1998 Penfolds Bin 28.

Then went to bed haha.

Great Christmas day.

Just 2 on xmas.

Krug NV (bottled in the summer of 2012 with vintages from 1990 to 2005). The best champagne I've ever had. I've had more expensive champagnes and much more fashionable ones but this one tops them all. Lemons, white floral perfume, stones, chalk and bottled energy. With time in the glass the spice and savory characters grew. Cumin, hints of worstershire, orange blossom etc. etc. Loooooong, energetic and confident in its stroll on the tightrope. Might sound strange but I consider this to be a bargain compared to other champagnes in this price range.

Noble One 2010. Too young but nice enough and did the job of washing down the fruitcake smothered in washed cheese. Couldn't help but wish I had the 82 Ian (I think?) brought to an offline a while back.

Great Christmas day.

You opened them, but did you drink the suckers??!!

Nothing of real note here, except a Xmas bbq a week ago with grb2001 and other halves.

05 St Henri, absolutely floral and beautiful
96 Lakes Folly Cabernets (magnum) which was superb
96 Leconfield Cabernets not quite right, but still very enjoyable

06 Wolf Blass Black Label Cab Shiraz Malbec on Xmas eve, very nice drop

Merry Xmas and a happy and safe festive season to all, not to mention good drinking wishes for 2016
