Oops, how could I possibly forget the tasting of the WW1 years of the Seppelts Tawnies, hosted by Warren Randall this year around Anzac time to mark 100 years since Gallipoli. Of the 1914-1918 wines, '15 and '17 were my faves, together with the blend of ave 100yo age in the Lalique decanter. Just gobsmackingly sensational
veni, vidi, bibi also on twitter @m_j_short and instagram m_j_short
1982 Penfolds Grange 1999 Ralph Fowler Botrytis Semillon - at the princely sum of $5 at auction this was bargain of the year too 2008 Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay - this is the first vintage I bought of this wine and the last bottle was sublime
David, congratulations to you and your daughter. Giving away your daughter is a very special moment, perhaps tinged with parental sadness, yet happiness for the future. Were the wines you mentioned for everyone or your table?
Thanks and yes I only had one bottle of each for the main players on the night .... I managed about 20 pours of the Dom and the Para. A few of us spent some time concentrating (read regular sipping) on deciding whether the Mount Mary and the Seppelt were outstanding or exceptional and in the end we agreed they were both. ; -)
The standout white for me was 2002 Petaluma Riesling...at 13 years still has green hues and does not want to give up its twinge of acidity. Have 2 cases under stelvin and a case under cork...will go 20-25 years easily. Waiters friend (Allan) I am pleased that there are two of us at least who love this variety and will be thinking of you tomorrow as I open an 02 Pewsey Contours.
Cheers and will try to add two others here...although 2002 Bolly LGA was certainly a highlight!
2001 Taylors St Andrew’s Riesling. Have had 2 x bottles in the last few weeks, a freakishly good wine. 2012 Kaesler Alte Reben Shiraz. A young wine, but stunning 2008 Grosset Gaia – this bottle was singing
A 2010 Coche-Dury Meursault Perrieres from a winelist in France was superb and an abiding memory but I am not sure if on premise consumption counts so from my own cellar and taken to Aussie byo restaurants:
1999 Coche-Dury Corton Charlemagne
1993 Rousseau Chambertin
2002 Mugnier Musigny
Pretty easy to see where my preferred wines come from.
