TN: 2006 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Post by n4sir »

2006 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (screwcap): 14% alc. Medium to very dark red. Opens with the same flamboyant, malty and alightly tropical oak of its youth, the blueberry/cherry cola fruit surfacing with slightly green/vegetal characters along with a good dose of black coal; the palate’s medium-weight and velvety, and pulls up surprisingly green, chalky and short. A little disappointing today, maybe it will come around.

A shame, Ian. This is supposed to be a top vintage for SA. I'll leave mine a little longer.
Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Thanks for the update, I have 6 in the cellar, will probably hold fire for a while as well.

In case its interesting, my tasting notes on release:
4/08/2008
Vibrant aromas of plum jam, blackberry, menthol and vanilla oak, this Cabernet tastes nowhere near as ripe as it smells exhibiting a somewhat savory palate of plum and blackberry, mint and a little cocoa. Weighty and mouth filling with a very chewy texture and loads of chalky tannin, the finish is rather long for a ~$20 wine.

I’ve had two from my stash. These are my comments:

22/7/14 - A little green and hollow, but nice length
31/7/15 - Great wine. Lovely with plenty of life

Maybe a problem with a very big bottling?

Good point. I have always wondered how they hope for consistency across so many bottles. (hope I've got the good ones)

Cheers

TN from 18 months ago. Dark; classic Coonawarra Cab Sauv; muscular, plenty of staying power. 91 points. A previous bottle had been in a sulky phase; the 2010 at a similar phase when tried at a tasting on Saturday.
