I'm not a Grange buyer nor knocker. I enjoy the wine but only if mature!

I did buy the 96 during the GFC for $250 a bottle from bonded UK stock. Panic and massive currency swings made the wine a no brainer purchase. So $250 a bottle is my price I guess but these days I probably wouldn't buy at this price . There are far more interesting wines that punch above their price toward an equivalent or better quality.

Wine geeks should easily b able to pick Grange equivalents at a fraction of the cost?

I'm in the 'its worth whatever enough people are willing to pay' camp. Current levels exclude me.

I'd probably buy around $250 mark, think its an amaizng wine and Australias best label.
Being a wine geek (as referenced above) i definitely agree there's some extremely stiff competition at that price point, so i'm unlikely to be stocking up even at the preferred levels.

For anyone who didn't see it, here is my take on my first Grange experience. It was a pretty epic one.

Whilst I concluded that Grange was not great 'value' in that thread, I don't think you can value high end wine as value. There is a diminishing return as prices go up, especially in this day and age where sub $50 wines can be so good. However, both with the iconic status and the fact that it is, well, really good wine, the value proposition becomes less important. This was a wonderful evening with friends that I will remember for a long, long time. I still think of it fondly. I wish it had gone longer. Will I collect Grange? Not really. Will I stash away the odd bottle hoping to share another evening like this with friends? Definitely.

Would I rather drink 50 Chalambars or a really high end Burgundy that I might remember for the rest of my life? No brainer. I reckon once you get to a certain price, say $100, a wine may only get 10% better for each extra $100 you spend on it, whereas from $20 to $40, $40 to $80, it may be nearly twice as good. But, if you can afford it, or have rich friends, who doesn't want that 40% or 50% better wine, as an experience?

No I'm still in Indonesia, will probably come back for a week in November to celebrate some birthdays. I have found plenty of places with beer here (hope you like Bintang!) but no one really sells wine. Went to a swanky hotel for drinks and looked at their wine list - Penfolds Koonunga Hill for $90!!! Nope. Never gone this long without wine....

I also think your and Felix's comments are pretty much on point. Value? No way. But does it enhance a special occasion? Absolutely, and in a way that may 'justify' the cost to some.

I have one bottle of 2006 Grange in my cellar, cost me $550 from retail with provenance assured. The reason I spent the money was me thinking many decades in the future I'll want a wine for a super special occasion and this will fit the bill. By that time I'm sure the price would be long forgotten, also I felt the need to have one bottle of Grange in my cellar, it'd be unAustralian not to.

For what it's worth, I'd be willing to spend $300 on another top vintage of Grange from retail upon release (i.e. don't have to worry about provenance). Probably only $150-200 for decent-great vintages from auction, and I don't buy terrible vintages of any wine so that rules that out.

Grange - good Australian wine indeed, but not that good for the price asking/offering today.
Plenty of nice wines around, for $100 , $150, $200.
The present Grange price perhaps setting up for the lower range wine to justify their inflated price
B 389, 407 for $80, St henri $100, 707 for $300 thats a real joke!

Do not mis-interpret what i am saying, Grange is a great wine, no doubt, and it is worth $700/bottle. (obviously, otherwise we would see stacks of the stuff sitting on the shelves).

No it's not. Last year I saw an '04 Grange for just under $400 and didn't think it was worth it - and left it alone. I mentioned it to a couple of friends suggesting that we share the purchase but no nibbles. I reckoned that it just wasn't worth it.
