Cellar breakdown by variety

I remember seeing a thread about the top 5 producers in everyone's cellar but I was looking at my cellar breakdown by variety today.

Mine is:

Shiraz - 32%
Riesling - 15%
Semillon - 14%
Cabernet - 14%
Champagne - 7%


I was a little surprised that I was so heavily weighted towards Shiraz but am guessing this might be typical of a very Australian centric cellar.
I appreciate all forms of alcohol, as long as its wine.

Here's my breakdown according to CellarTracker. Shiraz has always been dominant in my cellar as it's mainly Aussie stuff, but in the past 6 months Pinot Noir has come from behind to be no 2. :D

Still working hard on getting Nebbiolo (specifically Barolo/Barbaresco) up to at least 30%, an expensive process.

Although Shiraz looks very dominant, 26.2% of my cellar is actually Hunter Shiraz, which for mine is essentially a different varietal.

Germany 59.2%
Australia 28.9%
France 6.0%
Other 6.0%

Many more German half bottles than Australia though, so might be a little closer by volume :)

Rough numbers:
Shiraz and dominant blends ~ 38% # bottles / ~ 40% by value
Cab Sav and dominant blends ~ 20% / ~ 20%
Pinot Noir ~ 17% / ~ 16% (surprised at this - should buy some more and spend a bit more on PN based on what I enjoy drinking)
Sangiovese ~ 6% / ~ 12% (heavily influenced by my BdM Reserva taste in sangiovese...)
Fortified / sticky ~ 6% / ~ 3%
Riesling ~ 6% / ~ 2%
Other dry red ~ 4% / ~ 4%
Other dry white ~ 4% / ~ 3%

Red dominant cellar but that works for me just fine... probably should buy less shiraz but its too easy to find good shiraz at tempting prices in Aus.

The cellars that really impressed me were:

pc79's 14.5% Pinot Noir
cosmonaut's 12% Tempranillo
winetastic's 12.1% Nebbiolo
swirler's overall balance of reds (equal syrah, pinot and cab) followed by a healthy mix of whites (Riesling, Chardonnay, and Semillon)
camw's riesling 44.4%, and
paulf's port blend 35.2%

For my own part my wines are in a spreadsheet (most but not all) and are not organized in a fashion that lends itself to sorting. I reckon about 15% of my collection are Australian wines, comprised of Shiraz, Cabernet, blends, Riesling, stickies, port, and an assortment of others - including my prize sherries, a Yalumba 25 year-old Oloroso and a Lindeman's Show Reserve Oloroso - treasures from a distant past.

I try to keep my cellar reasonably balanced. Funny looking at the stats, I certainly enjoy my Shiraz but it's almost surprising to see it at the top. I need more Pinot and Italian varietals! Also should be noted I drink a lot more young whites that don't make it into my cellar. Stuff like young Riesling, Rose, some sparkling, Sauv. Blanc (mainly for drinking with friends who don't "know" wine, I swear!) etc. I buy as I need and drink it immediately. I also keep all my wine on an excel spreadsheet as well as Cellartracker, don't know why....

Shiraz - 19.4% - 69 bottles
Pinot Noir - 14.0% - 50 bottles
Cab. Sauv. - 11.2% - 40 bottles
Cab. Blends - 10.7% - 38 bottles
Riesling - 6.5% - 23 bottles

Riesling 40%
Pinot Noir 29%
Syrah 8%
Chardonnay 8%

Riesling is almost all Germany and New Zealand (and Iv'e trimmed out quite a lot of riesling to get down to 40%)

Well, what a good exercise. Following the last similar topic, I vowed to reduce the Shiraz %, and increase Pinot. I was delighted to find I have been successful...

Pinot Noir: 32%
Shiraz (inc blends): 30%
Riesling: 11%
Cab and friends: 8%
Semillon: 6%
Champagne: 6%
Italian bits and bobs: 3%
Port: 2%
Other: 2%

So, what do I draw from the exercise this time around? More Italian (Neb and Nerello in particular). And more grower Champagne.

Yep, excellent question, always great to have an annual assessment. Like Simon1980, I use these to guide the next round of buying.

Shiraz and shiraz blends - 26%
Cabernet and cab blends - 16.5%
Chardonnay - 9.9%
Riesling - 8.98%
Grenache and grenache blends - 8.1%
Pinot Noir - 6.95%
Nebbiolo - 6.9%
Marsanne - 4.6%
Mataro and mouvedre inc blends - 4.06%
Merlot - 2.98%
Nerello mascalese - 1.73%

And then odds and sods

I'm puzzled by the amount of shiraz in there, but then I blame Roger Pike and Alex Head for that!

Like others above, I need to dive deeper into Italian varietals, but happy with spread on the whole.

1. Bordeaux...... heaps
2. Burgundy...... not quite as much heaps, but still heaps
3. Rhone....... good stocks, but not heaps
4. Other stuff.... for when visitors want to drink wine, not heaps. Never gets drunk, usually given away at Christmas.

total? actually, no idea, I am guessing about 5k bottles. Too much, gotta stop buying!!!!! :( :( :( :(

Cabs and blends 50%
Shiraz and blends 30%
Chardonnay 5%
Riesling 5%
Remainder 10% - fortified, merlot blends, pinot, bubbles, other whites
