July purchases

Post by Pat »

Hello all,
24 x 2012 Metala Shiraz Cab ( hopefully this will last longer than the 6 pack I bought in May which was meant to be cellared!)
2 x Johnny Walker Green Label.

Expensive day by our standards;

1 x 2012 Henschke Keyneton Euphonium - taster, I hope we like so we can keep some

and some anniversary wines;
1 x 2010 Henschke Mt Edelstone Shiraz
1 x 2010 Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon
1 x 2010 Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz

I think I'll try and find a Lehmann Mentor or two too to taste and keep

4 x 2002 Leasingham Classic Clare Sparkling Shiraz

I found 4 bottles in a local independent.
I appreciate all forms of alcohol, as long as its wine.

Is there any indication of I'd 09 was good in champagne?

I understand it was on the warmer side, and not up there with 08. However still a decent year. By all accounts, it will be well ahead of 2010/11...

Correct... The few i've tried have had some tropical fruit notes due to the warmer conditions. Some producers are quite positive about 2009 and most will release a vintage wine. On the other hand, many wont release a 10 or 11. 12 should be excellent, but with miniscule quantities.

1 x 2010 Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz - one to taste as a young wine as the other one will probably sit for another 15+ years before we crack it
1 x 2010 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
1 x 2012 Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Zinfandel - the misses quite likes zin so I figured it might be a peace offering for my recent acquisitions

Was the wifes birthday, so we visited a wine shop and picked up 1x of each of the following.

NV Billecart Salmon Champagne
1996 Kays Amery Block 6
1993 Wendouree Shiraz Malbec

2003 Moss Wood Cabernet (Yummo)
2014 Grossett Polish Hill Riesling (Always reliable)

The Moss Wood was fantastic, smooth, balanced, yet a certain richness to it. Wasn't paying attention to keeping/making tasting notes, as it was more about celebrating her BDay. I was surprised that she selected a Cab, I predict a request for more like this to go in the cellar. Better go contracting again.

haha.... if only that always works! One year I tried only just shiraz, and got zip, nada, zilch. And just because I have the coveted initials doesn't mean I get dealt first. Last year I waited till late August in a lather of sweat till my card got debited, so I don't know how the Brady system works.

Last year I put my order in and within 2 weeks my wine was sitting in the office. (red crayon)
This year seems to be taking a little longer.
Go figure?
I visited the winery during despatch time in 2013 and it looked extremely organised to me.
End of the day it arrives when it arrives. It'll all be going into the cellar for quite a while so no rush.

Wendouree 6 x of all their wines.

CC charged but it seems to be a little high and I'm hoping it's not a postage charge to an incorrect address.

Thanks Mike,

I am still feeling that I got a bad deal when compared to Dan Murphy's previous deal for 2010 HoGs @ $570.0/btl 5 weeks ago (plus technically 5% off that price by paying with Woolworth's gift card). Even I earned extra $62 worth of cellar shares per bottle of HoG from VC during the triple points campaign, I will have to wait until another 2-3 months before I get those cellar shares mailed to me, hence losing time value of money compared to upfront discount from DM. :|

Went to a tasting the other day for Yarra Yering. First time drinker. They had these releases and the 2008's for drinking as well. Oh and the Carrodus high end range stuff and a 100% Voigner.

They were all very nice and pleasant. The 2008's showed what they would become with a bit of time. Would gladly drink any that are put in front of me.

But the prices are what get me. They are $80+ for entry level and well overs for the high end. Its just that for me I struggle to see the value. I would gladly pay $50-60 for their entry level wines, but $80 is just too much to stomach. And $150 for staight Viognier? Who honestly buys that  ?
This is all fine and their right as business people to do. I just shake my head and look elsewhere for value and there is plenty of others that do value.

I sense this is a broader theme of frustration for those on the forum.
Niche boutique winery makes good wine - gets talked about and discovered through communities like this.
Then word of mouth begets more interest and mass appeal follows as the brand builds.
They then either get a bit more commercial or they keep a list to reward the die-hards.
The commercial types keep raising prices to sell to brand/trophy junkies and the orginal die hards look at their 10-year verticals and wonder how long they continue to keep buying.
Start again and try to unearth the boutiques?

Follw up to above - purchase...
6x Chalambar 2013 Shiraz.

Talk about value for money $15-20/bttle and typically sh-ts all over $30-40 bottles; cellars beautifully.
Why hasnt the price for this ever lifted relative to others? Not that I want it to, but it stands out in the VFM stakes.
