I've been getting into a few Western Victorian shiraz over the last year or two. Seppelts Chalambar has been on my radar for years, with St Peters and Mt Ida a more recent development. Bests Bin 1 is also a more recent find.

This bottle appears to be from an export order that didn't happen (UK labels). The Poms missed out.

Red purple in colour, the wine shows some plum, cherry, nutmeg, and clove, with a small touch of cedar or tobacco. The palate is really where it happens, though - fresh red juicy plums, fine grained tannins combining with the acid to provide a slippery silky texture and some zing on the outside of the tongue. A delightfully long and full finish followed what until then seemed to be a medium bodied wine.

Impressive, especially for the modest price. I'd be happy to look at more recent vintages on the back of this.

I've got a few bottles of this - any idea on cellaring potential and improvement? Or too good now to keep tucked away?

I keep seeing some of the Cliff Edge at very reasonable prices. Maybe they're all from exports that didn't happen, although the labels on the ones I've had are the same as the Aus ones. It's been a consistent performer (IMO) which is very enjoyable up to about 8 years old - not that it won't last longer, it's just that it never gets more then 8 years old in my cellar!

I think I went to the release of this quite a while ago, in the front rooms of the Melbourne Club. I thought the RRP was a bit excessive for what was on offer, but the wine itself was fairly yummy (Allan's got a much better flair for words than I do). Still of the same opinion - and as long as I find some of these at under $20 when they're 5-6 years old, I'll continue to appreciate them.

Yum, I've had heaps but unfortunately none left. Great value wine.
