Wendouree Mailer

It's that time of the year again...received mine in the post today. Excited to see my first red line, after I finally made it onto the list for the first time last year. Prices reasonable with Shiraz, Cabernet and Cab Malbec @ $55 per bottle, the shiraz blends sitting on $45 a bottle and Muscat @ $25.

Confusion abounds.
There is no Marius mailout. Just a notification of membership to some that were on the mailing list.

Any word on how these look?

I've heard they are back to the older style (which I think is good)...The last few Wendouree vintages were very un-Wendouree like...

Everyone who is on the list gets into a flap about what colour crayon their mailer is scribbled with. Those that want to be on the list lament the fact they aren't on the list.

Are they that good ??
If you ask me I don't get them. Tried a number and always underwhelmed.
Others think it is the ducks nuts.

Two of the best wines I have ever tried are the 1990 cab Malbec and the 1991 Shiraz. Both amazing! And both at offlines, I'm sure others will agree.

Yeah..divisive wine for sure...
Pretty backwards when young...a lot of acid and tannins..takes a long time to come around...and some maybe they never come around...

More than a few people have bought for years only to realize they really don't like it....and I'm sure many of the people buying it now will go through the same thing...

I think when Wendouree ages nicely...most people will probably like it...but they take so long to do so (20+ years and sometimes you wonder if some of them ever will)..and in the meantime they're just a bit odd...texture wise you'd probably have to be ok with young Barolo...and flavor wise you need to be ok with a bit of nail polish....Is fruit really important for you? If so this is probably not the way to go....

I don't have the mailer as yet but I've read elsewhere that only the Shiraz has a limit imposed (6 bottles) . Is this right? I'd be surprised.

That's correct. Though as a 'red crayon' recipient, I'd be happy with one

Yep. Shiraz is the only one limited to 6 bottles.
That being said i am not sure if you are able to order more than 12 each of the rest.

What do you guys prefer the straight shiraz or shiraz/ malbecs?? The 2012 seems like a better year.. how much are yous paying for them? ?

Hunter, Wendouree wines will be between $45-55 depending on what you want, with the exception of the Muscat which is $25. They do not have any retailers, all orders are done via their mailing list which takes a while to join. I don't know of a vintage they haven't sold out of, maybe 2011? Good luck buying 2012's, you're going to have to look to the secondary market and pay inflated prices.

There's a pecking order when it comes to getting wine from the Brady's (winemakers/owners). A first time buyer would be wise to order a wide variety of wines and be happy with whatever they receive. So, yes, what you get may not be what you ordered. It's a different system, but frankly they can do whatever they like! It's their wine.

Wendouree are divisive with their wine style, and word is the 2013's will go back to the older style where the wines are built for the long haul and are not meant to be drunk young. They have a distinctive VA/nail polishy kind of flavour which some people find really interested and others hate. I'm on the side of the former.

Hunter, my favourite of the Wendourees is probably the Shiraz Mataro...which is one of the least collected, and therefore available at auction for a decent price. It is also considered to be a more approachable wine (generally) younger.

I have bought all vintages since 2008 and am interested in the "older style" vs. "earlier drinking" comments. Would I be correct in understanding the following:

2008: Requires "mid" ageing
2009: May take until the end of time
2010/11/12: More approachable early on
2013: Built for the long haul

I know this is generalising somewhat, but I'd be keen to hear what people know before making some mistakes.

The Shiraz Mataro is also my favourite. I cracked open a bottle of the 2012 a couple of months back, and it was a pleasure to drink (thankfully I have a few more stowed away for the long haul). Hunter, if you are interested in trying something similar, but without access to the mailing list / deep pockets for back vintages at auction, I'd recommend trying the Adelina Shiraz Mataro (note the winery / vineyards are located next door to Wendouree).

They are not available retail, the mailing list is the only way to buy them on release and the mailing list remains one of the hardest to get on in Australia

Not sure why you wrote this though, it is reasonably easy to get on the mailing list, just might not get all you want every time. Witness numerous Auswine members who have signed up over the last year alone.
So, Hunter and others, there is still time to get on board!
